Kids first sled?

My boy is now 11 and is interested in learning to sled. He rides dirt bikes and has experience operating a sea doo so I’m not worried about throttle and brake control. I have no idea what size sled I should be looking for? We would be doing our riding around the lake and some local trails.

Problem with trying to find a good used small sled is their asking stupid high prices something in the 400 to 500 fan cooled would be a good starter sled

My boys ride/rode 550 polaris fan cooled sleds. You don't have to worry about overheating on ice or hardpcked low snow conditions. They are very reliable easy on belts and run on regular gas. They have decent power but not to much that it will get them in trouble while they are learning. My youngest is still on a 2004 trail rmk. Lots of miles on it and still runs strong. I'm sure other brands have fan cooled sleds i just have experince with the polaris. I did see a few on Kijiji a while back. Hope you find something and you guys can get out and ride together. Great way to social distance lol.

I started on a 96 ZRT 600 triple hahah and I turned out fine. I’d look for someone that has a 400 or a 600. They’ll always grow into them

This is an age old problem in the industry.

How are families expected to get out and do this sport together...?
I don’t mind buying something used, but these smaller units are next to impossible to find, and then in decent shape....

If it’s in your budget but an Indy evo would be a good option. If not try and find a good Indy lite or any fan cooled sled as they are easy for young riders to handle.

440 fan.
Just sold my 13yr olds cat z440 fan for 1700 bucks to upgrade him to a 16 m6000 141.
They go for anywhere from 1500-2000 depending on condition.
The suzuki 440 is an engine that will go forever.
Look for a 97-98.
There's a 98 for 2100 in loyd right now that looks really clean.

If you are looking for a 300-550cc fan sled have the money set aside and be prepared to move quickly on it as they don't last long once they come up for sale.

I agree - but you seem to get what you pay for when you turn in around later. Market is missing the Sea Doo spark. The Cat 400 at 10k isn't it.

Honestly the best sled I ever got for my kids was a Yamaha 4 stroke phazer. She started riding it when she was 10. It’s a 2007 gt I long tracked to 144. Reason I went to the gt is the wider ski stance and the wicked plush ride. The sled is 80hp 4 stroke. So it’s not snappy like the 2 stroke which is what I wanted so she doesn’t get out of control. The other benefits are electric start , reverse, it’s got a radiator and electric fan so no worries about if it’s getting hot and they won’t notice. The biggest bonus is they are cheap and 4 stroke motor lasts forever.

I know guys will chime in and say there heavy and yeah they are but very stable. I thought I needed a mountain sled to mirror mine so my kids can ride all over the back country but in reality you won’t venture to far from the trails. Best kids sled ever. I’ve tried them all

When they get older and have the body strength to manoeuvre a sled off trail get them a Light weight mountain sled

2002 skidoo legend 380F may be just what you are looking for. I bet you could find one with ~1200 kms if you were to ask me about it lol. Take a look at them online and then if you are interested shoot me a PM.

Thanks to everybody who has chimed in, sounds like I’m looking for a 340 to 440 sled. I’m going to start doing a bit of research on them and I might contact a couple of you guys. That ski doo 380 may work the only problem is dad rides a Polaris lol.

If he rides already go bigger. My 9yr old daughter has been on an older cat 580 and she’s got it wide open way more than I thought she would.
