just wondering about camcorders

hey this year my family is going riding in the mountains for christmas and i was wondering about what kind of camcorder i should buy that is good for winter riding and summer quad riding? thanks for your help.

We used a digital camcorder last year, it was ok but this year I am looking to buy something new. I have always wanted a helmet mounted camera so I found this one on the web. ; it sound pretty much everything-proof and for $150 bucks, the only thing is that it wont zoom, strictly just a video and audio recorder.

We bought that one in a group buy. We Paid about $100. It nice that it`s water proof to 10 feet. It can hold a 2g card for about an hour of video. Two things bad about it is it doesn`t give a very good picture in low light. It`s mostly an outdoor camera. And you don`t have a preview when it`s hooked up to the computer. You have to record and play it back. Steve and I were trying to set it up in Revy and we kept getting video of the snow in front of the sleds. But with a few more adjustments it will work.

Search for the Canon HV-20. Its a little pricey, but a huge bang for your buck. HD signal at 1920x1080 lines of res. They are down to about $879. they started at $1399. Unreal image for the size of camcorder.

My brother bought the JVC HD Everio GZ-HD3 Hard drive camera but ended up taking it back because it was a real pain to do any editing as it has a new file format all it's own. The video was shot on it, it's great picture if you watch directly from camera to HD tv but as soon as you start converting you lose the HD quality. Hope that helps.

My son sells camcorders and would not recomend a Hard Drive or CD Drive. They are both still a bit tempermental for the abuse they can recieve in the mountains.

I've used a DV camera for about 10 years, actually on my second unit. Canon is my preference. They take the abuse and that's important.

all you have to do to convert is change the file extentions from .MOD to .MPEG and wala works like a charm, its kind of a pain. I have an Everio also and could not find a conversion program that worked but then was told to do this and it works great.

That's what I thought would work but our files are a .TOD extension and the change didn't work.

We have had nothing but success with our 30GB Sony Handycam (DCRSR40). Not HD, but 7 Hours of vid, and with bigger battery than stock, 6 hours of battery. The DCRSR42 is the newer model, with more zoom (40x optical instead of 20x). I see that most HD cameras do not have much optical zoom. I love not having any discs or tapes to deal with. I made a dvd last year. Just my 2 cents.

Ya as far as the DSR 100 goes its small enough to fit in my mickey pocket and has absolutley every bell and whistle on it for mics and mp3 playability and you can scoop em for between 270 and 400 depending who wants to try to screw ya harder. I fine it alot easier to operate but there is no zoom in and out . This thing is on your helmut or machine and just records your crashes 4 ya but i like it....enjoy

if you are fast you can get from b&h video (NY - google it) the canon HV-10 going for $649 USD...I'm using it as a backup, insert cam this season...smaller than the HV-20 and you can stick it in the front coat pocket.

Last Christmas I was given the Samsung SC-X300L Flash Memory Divx Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom and Wired External Camera. Great Camera!! The best part about this set up, is it is all designed to work together. There is a button/led light on the cord (about a 15" from the cam) and when you hold it down for a few seconds the complete unit turns on, with a green light (stand by) and a quick click will start recording, another quick click will put you back to standby & hold to turn the unit off again. The camera itself is not much bigger than a pack of Cigarettes which is a nice feature. The ability to turn the entire system off without even removing my gloves is great & allows a full day of recording cause you are not wasting valuable battery life.

You can buy it at most electronic stores. Mine was from Future shop, as they had the best prices. Last year it was almost $700 but I think they have come down to around $600.

Just bought a Oregon Scientific off E-bay for $88.00 + 20.00 for shipping,4extreme had one and I thought it was real simple and will do the trick.I also have a DVD camcorder and a tri pod I dont use nearly enough.Works real good though.

just bought mine at Visions for $440 plus gst and i bought 2 2gb memeory cards for $45
it looks great very small and light weight
just need more snow so i can try it out
