A week a go my neighbour had her vehicle sandwiched between two others when she was rear ended by a guy texting while driving. He told her he was texting, then proceeded to lie to police. Not surprised. I am not on the road very much each day, but man o man are a lot of people texting while driving. Every time my wife and child are out on the road, it scares the chit out of me.

Anyway, the news did a story on Alberta drivers and the horrible accident statistics.

348 deaths to date (2 more to be added over last couple days).....works out to almost one a day!!!!

Average of 51 injury accidents in the province each and every day.

These numbers exceed those of major metropolitan areas of much higher population density.

Disgusting!

They did a similar article on the news 20 ears ago. Next to China, Canada was the second most likely place to get injured in a motor vehicle collision. Of Canada, I believe Alberta was #1. I don't believe that Albertans are necessarily worse drivers than most everyone else in the world. I figure it has a lot to do with the number of vehicles we have per capita and the fact that Edmonton is the largest city this far north of the equator. Winter roads and the high percentage of vehicle owners must explain the bulk of the statistical gap between us and other areas.

I agree. Riding a motorcycle I see people texting on their phones virtually every day. major problem! I don't want to end up a statistic, run over by some asshat too busy looking at their phone to watch where they are driving.

I just got back from S.AB on a business trip and yes I hate to say it but the driving habits of some people are horrible. I like to drive 10 km over the limit but I felt like a turtle. So guess what…. when in Rome do as the Roman's do so drove 20 km over and still was getting passed. One younger girl passed me with her phone in her hand ready to a text :nono: Good thing there are a lot of straight stretches. BTW, we have some pretty bad drivers in BC too.

EXACTLY! I see people driving here, that cannot even speak English (or French for that matter). If you cant speak our language how are you reading signs and such? We have people driving here in winter, who have never seen snow. Do they even know what a winter tire is??

Last summer we met an older couple from Idaho, they’re son moved to Edmonton 30 years ago and they come up to visit every couple of years..

We started talking about drivers and they offered this observation, 30 years ago we used to comment on how polite the drivers were and how easy it was to drive a motor home up in your lovely country.....

Now what the hell has happened....??

My opinion, $$$$$a lot of people have moved here from all across Canada, the US and lots from other countries....MOST of the people that moved here are chasing the dollar and with the increase in population, even those of us that were born here have noticed the change in the driving...

They said this was the last time they were going to drive up here, going to fly next time.....they’ve were doing 100 kPH on the Banff parkway (posted 90KPH) and people were honking and passing, giving them the finger....

Maybe the auto makers can implement a signal sucker so phones wont work in a vehicle cabin if not in park. Then I can make an app to bypass it $$

What drives me nuts is the people who drive around with their phone in their hand talking on speaker. That isn't hands free and if your going to do it just put it to your ear. Idiots.

If I see someone texting behind the wheel I pull in front of them and they will see my brake lights. Also. The other day I drove 210 km all over Edmonton working. Not once did traffic hit the posted speed limit. Insane. People doing 60 in a 80. 45 in a 60. 85 on henday. Drives me fricken nuts.
