All,

looking for some help or ideas on what might be the problem.

2014 XM 800 163"

Rode most of today in Revy and around noon I started my sled and the gauge cluster didn't light up or come on, headlight was very dim (barely on) and no tail light. However there must have been some electricity generation as the sled ran.

I needed to get out of a bad spot so I pinned it up the hill and it was definitely underpowered and didn't like anything near WOT.

We decided to end the day and try to get my sled back to the trailer and avoid a chopper ride.

I rode it it all the way to the trail and managed to get it back to the trailer. Part way down we took a break and when I fired it up, everything worked, however I drove it over a few whoops and the cluster, lights etc died again. Got it to the trailer shut it off before loading it into the trailer. When I started it to load, everything worked fine again.

Im thinking stator/magneto, capacitor or loose connection/short somewhere.

we pulled the gauge cluster a few time to make sure the wires were connected properly and checked the fuses. Everything on that front was fine.

What happens to a sled when the stator goes? Can it still be driven like I did?

Sounds like a stator to me, I have a friend with 2 newer Skandics and had the stators go out on both of them with basically the same symptoms as you describe. We had to tow one of them almost 60 miles back to the truck as it wouldn't budge when he hit the throttle and it wanted to die.

Thanks! I’m going to take it Bowridge and get the boys to take a look at it!

If you ever get a over heat light/beeping and it is not hot it is a stator for sure.

Had my gauge cluster crap out last weekend as well all though only thing that wasn't working was the gauge. Everything else ran fine. Took the gauge out and took it apart and found water in it. The sides of the clear plastic had cracked letting water in.

Good idea, they will know immediately if it's the stator or not. Good luck!

Well took it in and the boys tested the Stator and it looked good to go. Rode it this past weekend and it put up with my abuse on Saturday, and part of Sunday; long enough for me to get a few smiles in at least. Basically the exact same thing as the last weekend I rode it out in Sicamous. Managed to nurse her off the hill, and of course when I got it to the truck, shut it down and restarted it, she worked like a charm.

It was DEEP where I was playing and I think stator is getting pretty hot, starting to delaminate and fail. I noticed the gauges starting to fade slowly over about an hour till there was nothing left. Barely a spark in the headlight. I don't know how the thing ran back to the truck (maybe off the battery?). By "ran" I mean, like a bag of hammer handles.

Anyway, the boys at Bowridge are looking after me and hopefully she's good to go this weekend.

Had same problem on 15 T3 this past weekend in sicamous - wouldnt start with e-start - but would start with pull cord - then by end of weekend gauges quit and would idle but wouldnt rev up ! Made it km from parking lot - then had to push a rope !
