Insurance For Sled

Hey. Got a question. Recently purchased a sled. Looking for insurance, what do you guys use/recommend. Usually ride Sicamous - is 3rd party liability all I need (other than plate)? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

I have my sled insured through Statefarm, use them for everything (house, trailer, vehicles,...) so it was just easy to add the sled to the policy. I have fire, theft and liability.

I have never registered a sled so don't have plate.

Yes, all you need is liability and registration.

You don't actually require 3rd party liability insurance on a sled in BC. ICBC agent will try to tell you you do though. You may want it anyway, but you don't need it by law. I've never carried it.

Liability is 70 bucks from intact thru Capri insurance broker if you are a BCSF member

I always leave mine in the truck.
Carry my registration.

Never had a problem.

No registration is a standard ticket, not sure what it's worth nowadays.

Haha, not riding Fernie anytime soon then.

If the gave a sticker instead of a plate, sure . But there really isn't anywhere I wanna mount it.

Last year met the co’s on mcbride. One in the group didn’t have regs. His was somewhere around 2 bills and a bit.

Kunts, did they actually want it fixed to the machine? Or you just had to be able to produce it.

Fixed to machine and also need registration papers. CO was actually good. Some guys were told so long as sled was on truck no ticket. Soon as sled touches the ground a ticket would be issued. I had papers and plate not on machine and was basically asked to display the plate going forward.

That's reasonable as far as cops go.
Zip tie it to the bumber to get out of parking lot I guess.

In BC we have the option of a decal for a plate, this is what I chose.

You are correct. However, to my understanding the superseding legislation is the Off-Road Vehicle Act which was effected in 2015. Which sets out a bit of a different guideline. We use when snowmobiling Forest Service Roads as well as Crown Land and therein lies the differentiation. If you're sticking solely to FSR's you're likely safe - but I would read the new legislation to ensure you're fully compliant. Yup, that's it. The link below is more current to Jan 9, 2018 but there really haven't been any changes. And I have read it, though apparantly you didn't follow your own advise. There isn't word one in there about insurance. Insurance is only covered in the Forest Service Road Use Regulation. Required on FSR for ATV/UTV, and Snowmobiles are specifically exempted. No insurance required for anyone riding anything on Crown land only. I've already won this argument with the CO's here.

I carry just comprehensive only and it covers fire and theft, covers other guy but not yourself, 253 per yr. Damm collision is over 600 almost as much as truck and worth 8 times, oh and no registration either, but might get it one day
