Has any one done this do you need to do the whole RIV thing, do you have to send any paperwork 72 hrs in advance, what do you pay at the border.

thanks

If it's a closed course competiton bike (motocross race bike), then all you will have to pay is the GST at the border. And yes, the paperwork has to be there 72 hours before the bike. If you are planning on registering it, or selling it to somebody who does, then it has to go through RIV, and get a federal inspection done on it. For the $205, I think it would be foolish not to do this, resale would be a pig with out the RIV sticker.

I bought a Seadoo from a dealer in Minnesota 3 yrs ago and all we did was show up at the border, dealt with the paperwork, paid the Gst and we were on our way without any issues! Used the Seadoo for a season and sold it in the spring with out any complications.

Prepare to be confused, following is my recollection of what I went through 2 years ago when comtemplating buying a dirt bike from the US. I started with RIV and they told me they wanted nothing to do with closed course comp bike and to talk to AB Motor Vehicles about registration process. I called AB Motor Vehicles and they told me this was incorrect and I need to talk to RIV again, to which I politely requested that the governing bodies need to get their stories straight and please call me back to clarify. AB Motor Vehicles called back the next day and said no RIV process required but it would need a safety inspection before I could get it registered.

edit: I never went through with it so cannot confirm how it is to be done correctly
