John, I meant she makes partial commision on parts sales. On top of it, she's technically only supposed to be supplying her mechanics with parts and only helps outside customers when she needs too.

I am a heavy duty mechanic and have been mostly at dealerships with the odd fleet job. It pays decent but is very hard on the body. New guys coming in have that sense of entitlement that is annoying but the trade isn't bad. As for the schooling part of it, I dint find it tough. Yes you have to pay attention but they make it easy to learn. Also getting your ticket is just the beginning for us. The learning part is never done as there is always changes and upgrades as well as the emissions crap we have to deal with now. If I had to start something else I would probably go into parts. They have it pretty easy lol.

My first trade is Electrician. Started out wiring house then some commercial buildings then Oil Field all construction work. then got the opportunity to do electrical maintenance. Got my second trade (instrument mechanic) while doing electrical maintenance. With two tickets I was able to get a job with Imperial oil Resources. Only regret I have is that I didn't get a 4th class power engineering ticket before ABSA tightened up to rules.

There is a big demand in the patch for dual trades people with Electrical and Instrumentation. Pay is pretty descent.

Thanks for the info my body is fairly bad already lol. Should I still go for it or would it be far to hard on me?

Depends on you. If you have the ability to work smarter, not harder. When I was younger I made the mistake of carrying heavy stuff without help like 180 pounds cylinders, or heavy springs around without a cart. just get the job done kinda thing. Even little things like jumping off trucks and equipment instead of climbing down. These may not seem like much at the time but they take their toll. Some days I limp around, some I am fine. I mostly do diag work now so it is a little easier on the body.

I always say, " If I would've known that I was going to live this long, I would've taken better care of myself."

So true I've been in masonry all my life I'm only 35 and it's been hard on me. Lifting stuff to heavy up and down scaffold cold and wet conditions just need to find a new future job.

The nice thing is I can work anywhere in the world now. This is good. Some bad would be having to buy a crap load of tools which are not cheap and take time to gather.

I'm 20 yrs into my wireline career. I've thrown other irons into the fire over the yrs but I really like my job. It has it's perks. Lots of time off, home in my own bed every night, good wages, free trucks to drive. I think being an assassin would be a good gig.

5-10 years ago there was a huge demand for he mechanics. I think a ton of people jumped on board. Not so sure it would be a great idea. I think you ya be late to the party. The best jobs will likely be taken. The rest will be cold dirty jobs. I could be wrong.

Some good advice here. I'm basically the same age as you John and have been pretty hard on my body over the years with work and numerous sled crashes.
Tired of seasonal work and definitely need a change though! Want to stay in BC and there isn't as many opportunities to get into a better job as there is in Alberta that's for sure.
