Scary part is there are people out there that are stupid enough to believe it.

MOL out of Japan is currently trialing a wind powered (sail) ship. It's estimated to save 5-8% of the fuel while transiting between Japan and Australia.

When these ships burn 50 tons of fuel per day at $1000/ton, 5% isn't an insignificant sum of money.

The ship in the CNN article is real, and is being trialed by a French company called air seas to see if sail powered ships could once again be viable, as they have been for milenia.

I think its meant to be more as an aid rather than primary source of propulsion.

If ship's travel at (just a guess) 20 knots and there is sufficient wind to overcome that, if a sail capable of 2 knots on those big ships, the engines would only require the energy for 18 knots and let the sail do the rest where appropriate. Could be a huge fuel savings.

Lol that sail would be bigger than a football stadium to do that.
