While many admit to driving dangerously at times, there’s growing support for measures like speed enforcement.
More than half of Ontario motorists confessed to engaging in risky driving behaviours, with younger drivers being the worst offenders, according to a recent study by CAA South Central Ontario.
The study found that more than 55 per cent of Ontario drivers admitted to participating in unsafe driving practices in the past year, a number that jumps to 61 per cent among younger drivers aged 18 to 34.
These statistics highlight the ongoing issue of dangerous driving on Ontario’s roads, with speeding, distracted driving and aggressive driving topping the list of risky behaviors.
“These actions not only endanger the drivers themselves but also put all road users at risk,” said Michael Stewart, community relations consultant for CAA SCO. “We must prioritize road safety by promoting responsible driving habits.”
The study found that the most common dangerous driving behaviors admitted by motorists are:
  1. Speeding: 41 per cent
  2. Distracted driving: 20 per cent
  3. Unsafe lane changes: 9 per cent
  4. Aggressive driving: 8 per cent
  5. Running red lights: 7 per cent
In contrast, drivers reported witnessing these dangerous behaviours in others far more frequently:
  1. Speeding: 84 per cent
  2. Unsafe lane changes: 76 per cent
  3. Aggressive driving: 76 per cent
  4. Distracted driving: 73 per cent
  5. Running red lights: 56 per cent
Stewart noted the disconnect between personal admission and observation. “The data tells us that it is far more prevalent for people to see others driving dangerously rather than admitting that they themselves are carrying out the same behaviour.”
Speeding remains a significant concern for Ontario motorists, particularly on highways with higher speed limits. While 86 per cent of drivers feel safe on residential streets, only 68 per cent report feeling secure on highways with posted speeds of 110 kilometers per hour.
“The risk of collision can increase when travelling at higher speeds,” Stewart noted, pointing out that dangerous driving behaviours are more commonly observed on highways.
The study also highlighted Ontario drivers’ support for stricter penalties to combat dangerous driving. This year, 35 per cent of Ontarians reported that fines and penalties for speeding and stunt driving have influenced their driving behavior — a 7 per cent increase from the previous year.
Despite this, the study found that 40 per cent of Ontario drivers actively avoid roads with Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras, even though 78 per cent believe that ASE can help deter speeding. Furthermore, 84 per cent of drivers support the presence of ASE near schools, and 81 per cent support it near community centers. However, 17 per cent of Ontario drivers — equivalent to more than 1.5 million people — have received a ticket from an ASE camera.
“It is no surprise that Ontario motorists are in favour of stricter penalties as speeding and dangerous driving continue to be an issue,” Stewart said. “What is surprising, however, is that despite the support for ASE, four out of 10 Ontario drivers will actively avoid roads where an ASE is present, an increase from last year.”

So define dangerous. The A hole doing 70 in a 100km limit holding traffic up is less dangerest then someone doing 110 km.
Dumb a$$s that signal to go straight in a passing lanes is a thing. Or after you pass you signal to pull in…I’m pretty sure your going straight but thanks for letting me know you didn’t decide to go left and fly off the road.
Not sure why good drivers have to fallow shitty driving rules to make the stupid feel equal.
It’s the Karen’s that think everyone should drive at there skill level, or everyone else is dangerest.

from my eyes the most dangerous are the binders driving tractor trailers.
The most recent trend I have noticed is the very large number of Walmart trucks on the highway west of Calgary to Kamloops, south to the Okanagan, with a large concentration in Sicamous at some sort of “terminal” or “transfer point”.

around here you count to 5 before you cross the #1 at a green light or you will end up in the morgue. those a-holes run red lights all the time.

Fawkin Uber/Karens are among the worst i encounter on a daily basis, along with yellow school bus drivers. To many paying attention to there electronic device's on the dashboard rather than actually driving. But yet car/truck manufacture's get a pass installing bigger screens in vehicles ffs. Also if your new/cannot drive in the winter conditions get a bus pass and work on it over a period of time. Seriously gets aggravating when the know before you go rely's on someone paying attention to device's for directions and then doing last second lane changes/such or simply going to slow and holding up traffic in an under developed infrastructure world.;)

We run 3 cattle liners commercially and from what I see on a daily basis it's like people have lost their minds! In the cowmobiling business you don't run into too many turbin suburbans but we are getting psssed hourly on double solids around corners and over hills by wagoneer'd and jacked up super duty's ! Because of the dynamic nature of a load of animals we have to be pretty conscious of quick stops and starts and corners to avoid flopping a pot on its side and people are constantly pissed at a guy! God knows Johnny might not make the NHL if he's a minute late to his U5 practice!

To survive. Pass these and Never follow a RAV4. Hyundai Santa Fe. BMW m5. Ford escape. Gmc terrain and other roof racker cars. They are mostly piloted by idiots and never do the speed limit. Four-door sedans and pick up trucks are much more confident and safer drivers. Lol imo

Well what I see on a daily basis is friggin cattle cowboys are the #1 worst for flying through our small town at 110kmh in a 60kmh zone with the engine brake screaming through straight pipes pissing everybody off and endangering kids trying to go to the beach, followed closely in second place by car haulers doing the same thing. Every damn day! So cry me a river.

We see it every shift with the Fire Truck and Ambulance. Most intersections lights and sirens on ,, and still get cut off.

I guess everyone is just in a hurry now. Maybe not paying attention or mind is occupied while driving.

That's a pretty dam good analogy and philosophy to go by.

I have huge respect for cattle haulers cause that's a tough job but agree that they are some of the most dangerous drivers out there. Always on their phones, always speeding, shotgunning energy drinks with both hands off the wheel and eyes off the road, driving 30 hours without sleeping. I have lots of friends that haul cattle and most of them are awesome drivers and very safe but a few of them do some sketchy stuff haha. My dad was turning off the highway into my town that has no turning lane, had his signal on just about to turn and had one of latraces drivers pull up and blast his horn then hit his rear bumper as he was turning off the highway. Even the turban guys wouldn't do something that dumb.
