How are the ford ecoboosts for towing?

I have 35000km on mine like the power for passing and milage but have not towed yet.

they have a pretty impressive tow rating, that's for sure. I think it's 11,300 towing capacity or 17,100 GCWR when properly equipped. pretty big numbers for a half ton

I pull a 28 ft enclosed with mine and pulls like a champ..............

My bud says his tows not bad but the mileage really goes into the crapper.

I get about 22 L / per 100 km towing a enclosed . Regular 12.5 L/per 100 km at 120 km. I guess anything is the chits on fuel when towing.

I had an eco boost rental for over a month while my truck was in the hospital and it got close to the same mileage as my diesel. they are definetly not very good on gas even without a trailer i imagine they would be terrible pulling a trailer in the hills.

Do you have to run premium fuel only in them? Or can you run regular?

I was just running regular it didn't say anything about premium and I did lots of gravel driving with it and they don't use a lid on the gas filler spout and everytime it was dusty inside the tank door so I can only imagine how much debris has entered the tank after 150 000km. I will gladly take the 2 seconds out of my life to take the gas cap lid off my truck and not have to worry about that lazy silly design

A friend of mine bought one for the great mileage, or so says Ford. My 5.3L Silverado get better mileage on the highway. You would have to drive VERY conservatively to get awesome mileage I would think. She isn't all that stoked on the fuel economy now...About 17L per 100 km on highway. My silverado gets about 13'ish per 100 km. I guess its all how you drive though.

I mean, comparatively, do guys running turbo sleds get great fuel economy? I would think not. That being said, I don't own one.

Thats a load of crap, the 6.2L tows better than the eco-boost and gets better mileage doing it. Empty the ecoboost does well for mileage( much better than the 6.2) but with a heavy load it really has to work and the mileage gets pretty shitty. Have never owned them myself but a few buddies of mine have them they say the 6.2 is a way better towing motor( even the ones who have eco-boosts). But Ford has sunk alot of time and money into this "ECO" technology and they want to push the volume of ecoboost motors into the trucks over the 6.2


talking to ford sales guys (i know to take this with a grain of salt) they saying it tows better than the 6.2L

I get about the same pulling my 27' enclosed. The Eco works great.

Remember folks that the more boost equals more fuel. High ratios like 3:31 will be fine running empty but as soon as you pull anything the L per 100 will be alot higher than the same truck with trailer tow package and 3:73 ratio.
I know a few running with the 3:73 ratio and are very happy with them and the ones with higher ratios are not.
Put bigger tires on your diesel and watch the milage drop due to higher boost due to more load and so on.
My 2 cents.

If you keep the engine out of boost it should be better on fuel than a comparable V8 based on displacement. But that is the key....... keeping it out of boost as much as possible. The turbos will spool on hillclimbs, with load, heavy throttle etc. It's not rocket science. Seems hit or miss whether they are. The one we had wasn't a lot different than any of the other trucks ( 5.0 Ford, 5.3 GM's) but it got driven pretty hard..... Not mileage conscience for sure anyhow.

And yeah high ratio gear sets (like 3.31) are useless with the .66 6th gear. I don't know why people think lugging an engine at 1400 or 1500 rpm where it is making no torque equals better fuel economy..... it doesn't. Once again it will get into building boost pressure with more load ( brought on by 32" tall stock tires, 3.31's and .66 overdrive). Gm is even worse with it's 3.08 geared trucks in that respect..... And what lame duck turds they are.

I like forced induction gas engines personally so it's alright with me. But I am in no panic to buy one.... not enough aftermarket support for me to be bothered.

2012 ecoboost, 3.73 gears, max tow capacity, 11,300. No word of a lie it pulls my trailer with my quad in back better than my 06 dodge ram 2500 did and gets about the same mileage while doing it. Love the ecoboost.

Exactly. When I think "Eco", twin turbos don't really come to mind. I've heard of a lot of people having a hell of a time getting close to the advertised 9.4l per 100k highway. If I towed my 28' travel trailer anymore than say 7-10 times or hauled anything with weight regularly I would just go 3/4 or 1 ton...the half tons are only so appropriate for big loads IMO.

My Silverado will pull 9000'ish and the trailer is only 4950. I wouldn't want to tow much heavier, but that's just me.

I'll just add that I have the 3:73 gears in mine and I'm very happy with it. I've pulled this trailer almost 7000km so far.

I have the same set up with gears and tow package^^^^ and couldn't be happier with the set up.

I towed my 4 place enclosed between Sicamous and Calgary every second weekend last winter / spring with an Ecoboost and I can tell you that it pulls hard! Picking up speed like crazy, pulling the hill heading East up out of Field. Having said that, the fuel consumption doubles from driving sanely and empty, to fully loaded. I could sure feel the difference going from 3/4 to 1/2 ton though. Definitely feel the trailer trying to steer you in the 1/2 ton.
