Honing Nicasil Cylinders

Just wondering how you guys are doing this? I talked to a guy in town who is pretty knowledgable about 2 strokes (I think?), and he said that the only way to actually hone them is with a diamond hone. He said that if the cylinders are in good shape, which they are, to not worry about honing them. He said I could use some 3M sanding cloth and WD40 to take the glaze off if I really wanted to.....but didnt need to.

Hoping someone more knowledgable than myself can point me in the right direction. It is on a 2010 XP. I am changing out stock pistons for dual ring MCBs.

don't worry about the nikasil don't do anything to it it does not need deglazing
sanding will leave bits of the grit off the sand paper stuck into the nikasil which will tear into your new pistons

I use a ball hone on all my rebuilds or when changing to a fresh set of pistons, I was told you wanted a nice cross hatch for the purpose of helping the rings seal. It doesn't take very long if the cylinders are in good shape, maybe 20-30 seconds a jug.

I could be wrong, maybe with all these new high-tech rings the cylinder doesn't need to be honed.

This is wrong. You should hone your cylinders every time you put new pistons and rings in, in order for them to break in properly. Use a ball hone or a fixed Hone, and create a good cross-hatch. If I got caught rebuilding a bike/sled/quad without honing a cylinder, I would have gotten a beating from my boss. It takes 10 seconds to do, and will create a better ring seal.

The ball falls into the port and rounds the edge off. I have seen many cylinders wrecked, even to the point of taking the nick off. I have recently read that a certain size is needed for each bore. Do your research first. For me........if there good, leave it alone. The cross hatch is usually still there. If there is aluminum build up, miratic acid to remove the aluminum, and a scuff of fine emery to blend. Nicasil is very hard and thin.....be carful.

Spoke to the service manager at my local dealer today and he said if the cylinders look good to just put the new pistons in. I guess Ill just put her back together. Thanks for the feedback.

on a 2 stroke i would not worry about honing unless you can hook it with your finger nail rule of thumb is .003 is the depth a finger nail with hook if you need to hone your better off getting re sprayed moongoose in vancouver is the most recommended in my area
