New to mountain sledding and forums. Looking for some advice on avi packs. I'm looking to buy one right away and am looking for some feed back on what you guys are using and like.

Thanks InFeRnO, I hadn't even thought about the vests. Some guys are saying stay away from the "air bags" and go to "Avilungs". Help! Hahaha

Cause the avy pack is awsome

The back back, all the weight is on ur shoulders

The avy pack is at chest

So comfortable to wear

Good luck getting the mouth piece in your mouth in time. That's all I have to say. Especially when you have a helmet on and your in full panic mode. I just hope I even have enough time to pull my rip cord on my Avy vest. That's just my opinion.

Kinda what I was thinking. I'm not familiar with them but that was definitely my concern. My mouth might be so busy swearing I might not be able to shove something in there haha.

Interesting comments guys! I'm definitely leaning towards the vest now! Makes sense.

I see you are a Newbie and I won't hold that against you. In the top right hand corner is a "search field". Use it and you will find mega information on most subjects. I typed in avalanche bag comparison and although the thread is old (2008), the information is still relevant.

For what it is worth, I use an ABS 18 liter bag. Snowpulse and ABS, IMHO, are the two at the top of the pile. Pull handles, internal pins, cords, bags and the shell are all very workable. I don't mind the weight on my shoulders and I pack enough to stay the night if need be. If I lose my sled or if I float to the top and my sled is buried, my survival gear is with me. Lots of pros and cons and lots of opinions. Buy what you think will be best for you and fits your budget. Try them on and see how they fit. I've worked with Scott air canisters as a volunteer fireman and I have seen the lack of maintenance on the air systems. Not all air is free of moisture, hence, the possibility of freezing mechanisms. Not all people like the extra cost of getting the nitrogen refills. It is your choice and read on. Good luck.

Thanks, much appreciated! I'm still trying to navigate around this site hahah. I appreciate the advice as I could use a lot of it! Experienced to sledding but inexperienced to the back country. Trying to stay safe as my wife has a bun in the oven and I can't be as reckless as I once was. Knowlage "helps" keep a guy a little safer or conscious, so the advice is appreciated from experienced back country guys.

I use a snowpulse back pack. I like the fact that it protects your head when inflated. Im not against the vest but down side is if you get seperated from your sled you lose all your gear, food water and anything else not on you. At the very least you should keep your avy gear on you at all times.

Huh

The vest pack is just like a back pack


Difference is the vest is a vest with a pack, the back pack is a straped back pack

Then some have avalanche bags ect or not

Oh ok. The ones I seen didn't look like much pack space, but then again I didn't look close enough I guess.
