Heated grip problem. 2013 XM-X

I am having a strange occurrence with my right handlebar heated grip element.

One day the right bar just quit warming, and as I looked closer, I discovered a hole in my grip.

Upon taking it apart the aluminum element melted in that one spot.

I replaced the element, and put new grips on, only to discover after a couple of more days of riding, it happened again, it burnt my gloves too.

It is in a very similar spot, and the hole is pretty much the same as before.

Now the questions:

I noticed that the grips are super hot, almost too hot. Is there a regulator or something that could be fried?

Anyone else have this problem?

I remember a recall on grips at one time, just wondering what that was all about?

Common issue with the 13, think it has to do with the way the warmers don't kick in till 2500 rpm, and it's hard on them not consistent power

Looks like it shorted to the bars between the gap in the cork. Any signs of that on the bars? I would put a wrap of tape there before reinstalling new grip heaters.

I will be looking at that for sure.

I wonder if there is a tape that can withstand heat more than electrical.

Same issue with mine, you can try but chances it will burn out again . Unfortunately it's a short in the voltage signal from the cluster. $480 later to replace the whole cluster to have heated grips. Bright side, you're sled will be brand new old 0k on it.

One to two sets per year with mine.. I found if I run the temp control over half way on a cold day I'm buying at least one on the Monday after. you can fix the burn with a little solder and foil tape to get another run out of it..

I got 2 yrs of use of my grips prior to this, I had my sled in at martins getting some other work done and was tired of replacing elements to later find out it wasn't the element itself. Let us know if installing a capacitor works, beats installing whole new cluster.

It's been a weak link to 13's, where 14's the heaters are on at idle

That's one of the stator updates

All a capacitor will do is smooth out voltage spikes and it would need to be put between the supply voltage and ground to do that. You would be better off adding I high watt resistor in line to to drop the current going to the grip heaters. This would reduce the heat output of the grip heaters but if they are burning out from too much voltage and current that would help. The resistor is going to get warm too so make sure it has air flow past it.

I had to replace the bars on my 13 after they snapped, yeah nice design BRP but that is another matter, when I bought the parts I was told to wrap the entire area with electrical tape before installing the grips. Either I am lucky or it works as I haven't had a hitch with them, or the wife's as I changed her bars out before they broke on the mountain ruining another day.

Just need to make sure the elements is over cork when installing.

Thanks for the heated grip info thus far. My 2013 has 2500 km and this is the first grip no heat problem I’ve had.
How can I check what needs replacing? Any advice or help appreciated. It’s just the left grip has quit. Thanks

take the grip off and look for any spot that looks burnt. id say just replace the 'element' and be done with it. $25 if i remember correctly
