Well google maps answered my wishes this morning. I was given a massive download from google maps, my offline satellite maps are now clear. i am not sure what the hell went on and i am not so sure it is available to the public yet. Maybe my comment that their satellite maps suck and they should go to Microsoft to see how to design an app. Sorry google and thank you.

Man you have some awesome computer stuff to work with, you should be able to get the best working gps ever with all the apps you can access with windows and android. I look forward to hearing your results from the hundreds of apps you can get. Please rate the apps you use.

Wow windows 10 surface tablet your set. Download all of alberta offline map it is a 160 MB file. Setting/system/offline maps/download. For your android try Chrome on the DEV channel and google maps offline download should be about 50 MB if you want high definition if it is 15 MB it will be blurry. Please get back on the clarity of windows 10 maps.

As I recall I had already downloaded Alberta and Sask for a recent fishing trip. We ended up not using/needing it (intended for emergencies really) so I guess I imagined that it only had roads on the map, and wouldn't "plot" a path. I'll have to try it out. I am picturing a device/app that I can take to Cataract.... hit a "MARK HERE" button at the staging area, then put it in my pocket, sled all day without paying attention (or forgetting to pay attention to) specific directions.... and then being able to refer back to the app for a path....

We will try a few (with phones initially) as they are always on us. Should have plenty of options, as you say, having both Android and Windows. My wife and I used to both use Windows devices, she eventually migrated to Android and seems to dislike it lol I think she will make her way back to Windows next time. Her tablet goes unused really... and I use mine all the time.

I'll let you know what I find out about mapping. I use the tablet in conjunction with my Nikon, and software called "Control My Nikon" it can do some cool stuff, including scripting. It's all getting to be too much sh!t to carry!

I bought etopo maps way back in the 1990's as gps's did not have map display, only utm or lat long numbers. So i would print off the maps and take them with me and plot my position off the map. Then gps's started coming with maps installed and i kind of got away from etopo maps a bit. Memory maps is one of the programs that run etopo maps, their licencing agreement is stringent to say the least. However it does work awesome if you learn how to download the offline maps before you go. You can just touch the marker on the screen and it will save it to the map or go to overlays for mark, route or track. If you want it in 1/50000 you will have to pay them 19.99 us or 1/250000 is free i believe. They seem to be pushing delorme maps more the etopo though. They also carry nautical maps as well. Most of them are free for a trial though. No whinning if you can't make it work the ratings are rather low for this product but it is just fantastic if you ask me.

Sign into your google account, once you have done that three bars will appear on the top left. Tap on them... a list of several thing will come up. If your up to date tap offline maps and hit the blue circled + icon.

Turn off your wifi and your cell coverage and check them out for yourself. And once you have done this let me know how clear...and how large was your download?

Did that. Works great, BUT...... when I tried to turn on satellite, it says its not available offline.

This is not a HUGE deal to me, as I have a Garmin Montana with Backroads Maps, but thought I may be able to get away with only carrying (and charging) one device.

I am hoping you just did something wrong for satellite not to be working, it works on mine but they only give you 30 days before you have to update it again. Hopefully it is not cancelled in 30 days. Maybe try and download google chrome on the dev channel and run maps from that. Or make sure you are In satellite view before you download the file.

Oh, I'm SURE I'm doing something wrong. When i click to add an area, it automatically reverts from satellite view back to map view. Every time. I did also notice the 30 day thing.

Well you can always do what I did for years, renew my subscription for 30 dollars each year so your garmin can have satellite maps on it. Painfully slow.. and a screen so dam small you can hardly see it.
