Does anyone know if this H1N1 flu is the same strain/virus that started the big outbreak a couple years back? I recall there being a huge rush of people getting a special vaccination just for the H1N1 flu before they incorporated it into the yearly flu shot. If you've had the shot in year's past, or have had the virus and built an immunity to it, is getting the flu shot again going to help more (just in regards to the H1N1)?

Down an ole dirt road in a town you wouldn't know
Due to work taking me on the road, in camps or hotels, I try to get the flu shot every year. One year I didn't and I paid for it dearly..And now with my kids in elementary bring home every damn virus known to man,for the past 3 years, I had enough and started to get the kids flu shot against my wife's wishes. I just get fed up of everyone in the house getting sick for what seems like the entire winter.

Would've thought that once you built up an immunity it was with you forever - or at least for quite a long while. I guess I forgot too that there's only profit in treatment, not in curing or eliminating anything with our healthcare systems, it's too bad.

There are different strains of influenza every year. The flu shot usually covers 3 different strains the CDC thinks will be most prevalent during a given year. If you get this years shot it covers the H1N1 virus. You should build up an immunity against this particular strain for a period of around 10 years I've heard.

For what its worth (15 mins of your time) getting a flu shot not only protects you but the general public (your friends and family). Its amazing how many don't understand the difference between a cold and the flu. I had the flu shot the last 5 years and never had the flu, but will get a mild cold every year for a couple days (head cold, cough, aches) resulting a couple "sick" days from work. Before started taking flu shots had the Norwalk virus, been extremely sick for a week. By getting this flu shot you are greatly improving the chances from catching any nasty viruses that the health professionals are predicting to hit during the flu season. But this only immunizes against certain strains. My wife is a RN at an ICU unit in Edmonton, and their unit is overflowing with H1N1 patients all ranging from 17-70yrs of age. I'm surprised at how many refuse immunization because of their misunderstanding of cold and flu symptoms or so and so has flu shots and gets flu and I don't get them and never get a flu. How about thinking about the health professionals having to deal with the pandemic of an outbreak because of others poor misconception and that I don't need it. Everyone should be forced to take the vaccination or pay for your own provincial health care. Read up on the flu and cold in the following link. Flu or Cold? Know the Differences

If you noticed the swine flu (H1N1) similar to Norwalk will result in vomiting and diarrhea. If you get it you will wish you taken the flu shot.

My whole family of 5 just finished getting over it. Some of us puked with diarrhea, some of us just puked a couple times. Took a couple days for each of us to get through it with some chicken noodle soup. Pretty quiet New Years. Lol. We're all good now. No flu shots just a bunch of kick azz immune systems around my house.

On the 28th of Dec I started feeling sick. by the 31st I felt like the end was nigh. Vet says I most likely have H1N1, drink lots of fluids and get plenty of rest. I'm feeling like I've made it over the hump, but that was one of the most nasty plagues I've ever had. has anyone got their flu shots? Why or why not? Seems like a good topic.....

For sure. Pretty soon Redford will be saying that it was a bad year for flus and they are short of immunizations. Then she'll be saying the budget is gone because they spent too much on healthcare. No one will complain because everyone wants healthcare. :endrant lol

Forced? Then smokers should be in the same situation, forced to stop. I have no trust in the government and health care system one year they say you need to use anti bacterial soap now its no good. Same for baby's for years they said babies must sleep on back to prevent sids, then stomache, then on side.... every year there is something new that's going to kill us all(remember y2k?). Fear mongering to help dug companies make more $. How about general a general healthy diet, ad proper washing of hands? I have not had a flu shot and have not had the flu in years.

health system is way to close to the drug companies, pill for this pill for that....

I was pretty damn sick this week. Think I threw up 7 times, tons of stomach pain, fever, and exhausted from Monday night to Thursday night. Now I seem to have something like a regular cold, just lots of mucous.

Tried to go to the doctor Thursday night but of course, the walk-in clinics are 3+ hour waits so I turned around and took OTC drugs.

I get the different strains of influenza every year idea. But specifically with this H1N1 strain that has apparently been around for a few years at least now. Is this year's flu shot going to help more, or be better, than last year's, or the year before, or the one before that? They all had protection from this H1N1 apparently.

I'm not saying if I do, or don't, get the flu shot, but either way it does kind of seem a bit like a money grab on one hand to me. I also appreciate the efforts of all the healthcare people working hard to help those who are ill.

started out with a tickle in my chest, like I inhaled a fur ball and couldn't cough it out. then after going out and plowing snow I came back in and couldn't get warm, I was dressed very well and didn't feel cold while out there. started shivering uncontrollably and only stopped once I hopped in a warm bath. then started getting dizzy, very tight in the chest, major fatigue and couldn't catch my breath without panting like a dog. fever went up to 102, lots of shivering then sweating, no appetite and horrible watery diarrhea. coughed until my ribs hurt. 29th is when I first felt the tickle, by the 31st it was full on. skin around my eyes went dark and my lips were a dark purple at the worst of it. nasty headache, and my neck was sore so that I could not get comfortable to sleep. I never threw up at all tho

I agree 110%. Plus who knows what these garbage flu shots will do to your body in 20 years down the road. No one really knows, but hey at least the drug company's are making billions from this.

The whole H1N1 thing is blown way out of proportion too. The thing most people don't know is that there is more people killed by the regular flu each year than those killed by H1N1. It's all scare tactics to make money. Sad but that's really what it's all about now these days.

I've never had a flu shot and never will, and I have been fine.

If a simple needle would greatly reduce the chances of catching a highly contagious virus and not getting the symptoms described by teeroy, I don't understand the fuss of those who refuse it.

on the bright side, I will never get this strain again. old school vaccination....I'd rather do it that way than take my chances with some loosely engineered concotion that no one knows what effects it may have down the road. if your immune system is compromised or you have family members that are susceptible, then go for it. we're all healthy with strong immune systems in my house.
