Not much return on investment being you will undoubtedly be replacing batteries long before then and throw in the numerous hail storms and other weather events that will damage and wear out equipment. Maybe just put that money in an investment account.

I also pay that for power, but during the summer months I sell more then I buy so I'm money ahead. In the winter I switch to a lower rate plan.

But no, BC Hydro doesn't allow that. In Alberta we have a deregulated market so energy providers compete for business, this is how SpotPower gets those of us with solar panels to use them.

What batteries? Everyone keeps bringing up batteries. Do you guys even know how a grid tied system works?

Yes I am. Same power company just different rates. It's really simple, takes 5 minutes to log onto my account and change it, the rate comes into effect 10 days after.

BC Hydro doesn't have anything like this.

I will take the 14500 and invest it in Amazon or even just a GIC term investment and come out ahead. My power will still come on and I won’t have to worry about solar panels. Anything the government is promoting is the exact thing I tend to stay away from.

I am not sure what bc hydro has for buying power from residences, they are a little spoiled not have to deal with lots of dirty power. I have a couple of smaller solar panels as well, not sure what to do with them, right now they are given a pass like the bird grinders. Soon that will change.....another David Suzuki environmental disaster in the making.

From what I have read the majority of solar panel components despite being advertised as made wherever come from China . They also put up useless warranties that state 25 years when its unproven territory. Think about anything that you own or have owned and if it’s from China sooner or later it will be in a toxic waste dump somewhere.

Solar panels aren't anything new, the first photovoltaic solar panels were built back in the 70's, some of these are still in use today. The difference is the huge reduction of the cost that has made them affordable to the average person. As you mention most of these panels are made in China, I know mine are, but unfortunately this issue isn't exclusive to this industry. China has spent trillions of dollars to ensure they dominate the market on all electronics manufacturing; cell phones, computer CPU's, appliances etc.

The warranties cover the power output, mine are guaranteed to produce 80% of the energy they produce now in 25 years. Solar cell degradation is both measurable and predictable, it's not a stretch for the manufacturer to offer such long warranties. The only issue would be if the company disappeared and there was no one to contact about getting a replacement, but I'm not concerned in the least about have a panel fail.

I think we should cancel all future solar/wind/hydro projects until you stop being mad at David Suzuki for CFL. I don’t recall anyone being legally forced to use CFL either.
