Hey guys and gals…. I know everyone (including myself) likes to jump on the truckers for causing the problems here, but the issue is deeper than that. The next time you’re talking to your MLA/MP (because I know you all do…) be sure to question that person on why so much freight is being moved via truck rather than safer and more economical solutions (supposedly) like rail.
There’s a reason the rail was laid down in the first place. Extremely unfortunate that so many spur lines have been removed in western Canada, with CN/CP claiming these lines were uneconomic. BS… the spur lines may just not have been as LUCRATIVE as the main lines. Rail is federal jurisdiction, yet has so much regional impact that yes, a person should be lobbying both your MP and your MLA.
I work for a company that sells 100’s of millions of dollars in product every year. 15 years ago we moved 99% of it by rail. Since then that has changed to about 50% or less. CN and CP have a monopoly on the rail business in Canada and essentially have more power than gov’t. With that power they can set the price and demands for how product is loaded and what they deem the proper way. They have drastically increased price to the point it’s almost not worth using them even though you can fit 3x more in a box car than one truck. Even with the price increases we still were moving lots via rail. Then covid hit and CN’s bottom line aka profit margin took a hit and when your bigger than gov’t this just doesn’t fly. Now they have gone full retard and have a list of demands a mile long with how they think cars should be loaded. We used to be able to load four railcars, paperwork and seal them up and out of the warehouse in under and hour. Now due to no reason at all we have to run strapping, load the car, fill air bags to squeeze the load, tighten strapping , pictures of the whole process and close up and seal. This process makes loading a car take over an hour per car now. It also costs about $5000 extra per car in materials and man power. There was never one issue in 30+ years with pulp loads shifting or moving to bring this on. So they made us hire a “consultant “ to show us how to change to their preferred process, he of course contracts to CN……. And we pay for that. Then the company that sells the strapping and loading material, well that is owned by CN. Getting the picture? Their bottom line never can take a hit so they pass this on to customers so they can continue to have record profits. And if you argue it they withhold railcars and service.
I couldn’t agree with you more… ask any farmer about the issues with how the rail system treats the end user.I work for a company that sells 100’s of millions of dollars in product every year. 15 years ago we moved 99% of it by rail. WTF does this have to do with this thread????I couldn’t agree with you more… ask any farmer about the issues with how the rail system treats the end user.
The fact remains that it is by far the safest way for transporting goods.
Every person in Canada should hold their MP to task at why the railway system has become so profit driven, when it was originated on the backs of taxpayers.

Golden road improvements/closures.....
Please take your rail information and excellent comments to a new thread you are starting, about:
Railways in Canada.........
I promise I will not go in there and derail it.....BWHAAA
Don’t argue with stupidity…Because it’s blocking up the roads and causing more wear and tear on the roads necessitating road improvements to handle the extra traffic, the term cascading effect comes into play, that’s what it has to do with the roads
