My wife and I drove down to Fort Macleod yesterday to pick up a dog we purcahsed and heard the news about the Avy's on the radio. It was then that she told me that our spring ride was cancelled again...she couldn't understand why any man would put themselves or their kids/friends at risk doing what we so called loved! About an hour later we were around Nanton/Claresholm or thereabouts and the sun was shining on the mountians in the distance...she then piped up and said, "oh my god isn't that beautiful!" to whcih I said, "well imagine yourself in one of those mountian ranges on a clear day with your closest friends and family seeing what only others will see in books. Up at the top on a clear day looking down into the valleys!" I rest my case....!!!! RIP fellow sledders.....

Hmmmmmmmm, maybe global and ctv need to be made aware of these statistics!!!!

they just need to ask the right people, but we know that will not happen,I have put on over 18,000 km in the last 3 years and was not avy'd. over 96% of all riders in the BC backcountry will not be involved in an avy.
the percentage of riders that rode the 3 managed trails here in the last 4 years compared to deaths is less than .05% and in that .05% I have included a couple of very bad incidents that did not end in a death.

I will say I am fairly new to mountain riding but I feel that I have taken more steps to be safe riding in the mountains (gear, machine, training) than I have for anything else in my life and it's sad that sleeding is painted the black sheep in the backcountry.

All I can say is I am way more nervious driving to revy that I am on the mtn.

With Some nut bar trucker passing in a blizzard downhill around a corner at night with another coming the other way. Seen that more often that I would like.

I agree that they need to made aware of the stats, however I highly doubt that they will feel it's worth reporting to the masses that they have filled with their Snowmobiling is Bad propaganda over the years.

wow our wives have the exact same idea on that subject. i will never get to the hills now. i think i was even getting close finaly.

Because of a very small proportion of sledders that don't heed the warnings, are uneducated, careless or just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time we are all painted with the same brush from those that don't do what we do. Your comment about the "nut bar trucker" is exactly the same thing, because of a few, we(truckers) are all painted the same also. Everyone needs to use there brain and think about what they say and the image they portray.

Just throwing out there....ever think that nut bar trucker is trying to due everything in his power NOT to run over a nervous driver downhill in a blizzard and putting his own life in danger by going into oncoming traffic to go around rather than running you over?.......Just sayin

I dont understand how they say snowmobile hillclimbing needs to be stopped! well maybe we need to stop letting people go out of bounds at ski hills and stop heli skiing! You never really hear anything when skiier or boarder dies other than it is so sad and they died doing what they loved doing but when a sledder is killed he is labelled as a rebel and a risk taker and that the situation could have been avoided but it wasnt! it really is quite the biased opinion the media has for the different winter sports. IMO the guys died doing what they loved to do very very tragic and sad day but in the end I beleive it was meant to be. I have a major knot in my stomach rite now knowing that i had an ivite to go riding with the group of guys who helped with the intial rescue but was in valemount. my condolences to the family

We all accept the risks and consequences of going out riding in the mountains everytime we go. There is NO need to put laws in place or ban these sports because these accidents happen. WE make the choice, its our life, and we have to deal with the consequences.

Let these accidents be extra large remiders for us to be safe out there people! If you see a slope and are doubting whether its safe or not...make the right decision and find a new one to ride!:d:d

As far as the east coast know it all on global, how many deaths occur from high speed trail incidents, impaired, wrecks from sledding from community bar to community bar, must be a few to have full time RCMP on patrol costing us tax money. Never hear global interviewing west coasters on thier views about what happens in their world,but dont really care either.

Far too many guys are buying Point and shoot sleds, their experience riding is minimal, I agree that Education is key, Need to loose the attitude "It won't happen to Me", I've ridden with guys like that. Scary

Say isnt the guy in Nova Scotia they interviewed the same guy who is trying to get all checking out of hockey? and he is one that pushed very hard to get wearing helmets on bicycles the law in Alberta?? which is now the law. lol
