let me break it down real simple like. There are these things called mountains. There are these things called avalanches. If there is only one person on or below the thing called a mountain when this thing called an avalanche happens then only one person dies......

You would no more send in ten people to defuse a bomb then you would have four people on slope at the same time. Ok, so sledders, one at a time. When not, other people have to put themselves in harms way for the recovery. And the mental tole on Search and rescue is heavy every time they get called in for a multiple sledder burial situation.

If mistakes are not learned from then these people died in vain. Year after year, multiple burials. Man up and spread the word, ONE PERSON ON SLOPE AT A TIME, and this includes the runout. Or do you all think the power between your legs is somehow mightier then mother nature? Keep making mistakes like this and all high angle terrain will be shut down to us.

If I could thank this twice, I would.

Bye
heres a link. My condolences to the family and friends of the sledders.

My condolences aswell. But I thought I should bring this up, notice how they always show the worst of the situation, like the sledders getting stuck and tipping, but never just going strait up the slope as most of us just do.

The media is always biast against snowmobilers and atvers and im sick of it.

I like how they say sledding covers half the deaths in the last decade. What causes the other half? Skiing Snowshoeing? So how are we really any worse than others. If i remember right hasnt the the avy deaths in sledders dropped over the last couple years?

Nope. Fatalities have gone up. THey've gone up quite a bit over the past 5 years - source is Avalanche Incidents publication -CAA. Of course, the total numbers of people going out is also up. It might be that because there are more new people in the sport; it could be that the newbs need more basic knowledge (eg Don't all sit at the bottom of a big slope together) but that is all just theory.

Thanks for the post johnc. Harsh but needs to be said

i don't think hardly any newbies have been killed or involved in avys in the last 3 years or so...... Most are experienced riders. As were our 2 friends lost a few years ago in seperate incidents........

I think fatalities are going up because the average new mountain sled stock, can now get into places where only extreme modded sleds could get into years ago, so more riders are getting back into what might be considered extreme riding areas, and as such, higher risks of avy's...............that combined with the proclaimed false security of "avy equipment" and you have a fine recipe. In '98 our 136" summits and yammies etc. Couldn't get anywhere close to the areas that stock sleds nowadays can achieve.........

Just wondering in this last incident at Golden if it is known, did the victims have AV Bags on, or was this a case where they were in the impact of the of the slide at the bottom and AV bags would not have helped to a degree?
