So with all the rain it has been very slow going on the build. My frost walls turned into a swimming pool of muck. Pump ran alot.
Back filled now and waiting on frammer. Wood is here and trusses are here in a couple days.
So woundering what everyone is using for lights, the shop part is 34X20 with 14'6 walls with scissor truss, the car side is24X24 with 9'7 walls again with scissor truss. I would like to keep things clean and un-obstructed if at all possible.

A couple pics of the.....dirt!

Ya he is supposed to be here Thursday / Friday ! The price suprized me. My brother's garage 36x 26 with a small work area. Was $3000 cash. So I planned/ budgeted on double! NOT!

I went with 9 - 8' T8 fixtures in my 30'x36'. You almost need sunglasses. No shadowing at all. They have a digital balast that screws up the fm stereo and intercom. I probably would have went for the T5's, but an electrician buddy got me all my fixtures and bulbs for a fraction of the cost.

End to end rows of T8's are better and cheaper for most garages(work in cold at -20').4' T5's are too bright and inconsistent lighting for most ceilings under 12' high and don't like cold weather.

I was doing a bit of reading up on the T8 vs the T5 and found this link, interesting read / comparison

Good lord....I never geussed it would be this hard to find a supplier/someone who knows whats what about these light fixtures. Phoned 3 eletrical wholesale places in Red Deer...#1-they only come in 4 foot? .....#2- you have to have 4 feet of chain for to meet fire code. And my fav #3- whats a T5?
Anyone have a supplier that has a clue?

He sent a lighting layout but I haven't been to the shop to pick it up. For an unheated area you need HO fluorescents, they're the only ones that light up reliably in the cold. The lamps are 4' but they have 8' fixtures.

I love seeing projects like this! It looks like it's going to be an amazing area! I wish that my wife would let me build something like this!

Back to your question...once the walls and trusses go up, this project is going to move fast. You might ask an electrician the best type of lighting to use with your set up as they typically know exactly how to create what you are looking for. When I was redoing our kitchen, I read the angie's list electrician reviews to find someone that specialized in re-design. It really helped because he knew how to trace through existing wiring and get everything wired correctly.

The nice part about this is that you get to be creative. I would just make sure to keep it dimensional and offer different type of lighting for different events or activities going on out there.

Looks great! I'll be curious what it ends up costing as I'd like to do something like that down the road.

I went with 8 four foot two tube t8 fixtures in my 24x26 garage and it was great! No shadows and lots of light!

for questions on lighting and stuff try calling a commercial electrical contractor to see if they can help give you info and direct you to a supplier....look up hardwire (might be "hardwired") electrical in red deer, good electrical contractor, guys name is mark. should be able to maybe steer you in the right direction
