Sometimes when I get stuck and have to dig myself out.......I get REALLY short of breath and tired VERY FAST! So I take a smoke break

are you ever not stuck? That tank of a Ski-doo is so heavy Im surprised it doesnt sink to the bottom of the snow pack like the titanic in water.......

Wasnt stuck in the picture, that was in Chappell in 2010. Getting stuck on the trail is an art, and thou shall not be judged for getting stuck on trails.

I run .... a lot. Sledding actually gets in the way of my running (but I've been choosing the sledding over the running, I call it cross training :) . Been running 20kms every weekend for a few months training for the Calgary half marathon (which was last weekend (21.1kms).
I'm a new rider. This past season was my second year and I was blown away how winded I get from trying to dig out a sled. One would think if you can run for 2 straight hours 10 minutes of digging would be easy..... NOT!

I run... Alot too! And I sled in the winter. Alot... But never enough ;) I'm signed up for a Spartan Race in Calgary, so I have tried to add some different types of training to my routine in order to prepare for the obstacles on the run. Last weekend I went Downhill mountain biking for the first time: talk about awesome cross training :) The bruises and cuts on my legs tho... Less than attractive. Gonna need some protection for my chicken legs!

Im fat and out of shape but sledding seems to give me super human strength because i just forget about everything. Go out and have fun and try not to die. Cheers!!

I'm not fat. I have small feet. That's why I sink into the snow.

I'm a little like Chance; not fat, medium feet, but I wear snowshoes if it is real deep and soft. Therefore, I don't sink too much.

Living at elevation (4360') sure helps the breathing. Just the same, in the early season it is tough and I don't care how good of shape one is in, trying to unstuck a 163" that is trenched in can be a challenge.

i myself have excersie enduced asthma and i dont find it too bad until i get stuck but i learned to take it easy move at a pace that doesnt exhaust you when stuck. if in doubt make sure you have a pop with you such as pepsi or coke, the high caffein content will stop and asthma attack in it tracks, learned this as a child. or go get a prescription for som salbuterol ( blue puffer i think) and just take it in the morning, i believe they are really cheap not even sure you need a prescription for it.

Correction: you have living-in-PG-induced asthma that is aggravated by exercise... Just kidding! (kinda!!)

Yes- caffeine is a temporary aid but it shouldn't be a standalone if you have asthma. The blue inhaler is the Ventolin mentioned earlier- aka salbutamol or salbuterol in the US. It is not available without a prescription, unless you know an RT in PG who sleds :))

It depends on what your triggers are. For most people it is dust and pollen, mold, food etc., There are a few people for whom cold air is a trigger, exercise is a trigger or sudden changes in temperature (hot to cold and vice versa) are a trigger. Any of these last three could cause you trouble in the mountains with asthma. I think it is very rare, but it is a possibility. Make sure you have your fast acting rescue inhaler with you (salbutamol/ventolin- usually a blue inhaler) to use as needed. If your asthma is exercise induced, take it 15 minutes before you head up the trail. If you have a cold in the weeks immediately before you go on the trip that is triggering asthma trouble, seriously consider visiting the doctor and starting on an inhaled corticosteroids (like Flovent) to reduce airway irritation and help your Ventolin work better.

Most of all, between stucks and shoveling be sure to take deep breaths and enjoy the scenery :)

Have fun,
Your friendly local Respiratory Therapist

Sledmama, your going to scare the crap outta this guy/girl with all those big words!!!! :) My nephew (he is 50 years old now) has had asthma bad his entire life, he rides like an animal, the only time he has had any trouble was in -25c weather and that is too cold to sled in anyway. Just pace yourself if or when you are exerting yourself (riding brp) (had to throw that in for snopro) and all is good... carry what you need for emergency as my nephew does and have fun!!

haha sled mama is correct, i agree with you on the pg thing some days its just terrible haha i havent had an issue in a long time although im sure if i got the blue one and used it more often it would be of benefit while riding. atleast if you got a high caffein drink you can stop it at that moment :p i dont have this issue as much as i used to as a child. only find it an issue sometimes when stuck. :D

Thanks for the corrections hehe its been a long time since i bought any :p but i do also have connections with a respiratory nurse ;)

Ha Ha yep those are the ones!

Hey on another note does anyone ever have sort of panic attacks when trying to dig out your sleds???
I think I might be Closter phobic? If I'm riding I’m fine. When I start to breath heavy digging out I panic and can't get my helmet off fast enough! It’s really weird. I seem to need more air or I freak out. Now I take my helmet off first J

I have panicked twice- once I was lost and I could hear everyone driving past me or around me in the distance but no one could see me.

The second time I was trying to figure out how to tell him what happened to the a-arms. Luckily the tree it was wrapped around was a big enough visual clue ;)

Dont know if it closter phobic, i get the same thing riding quad. Im fine when everything is fine but if i get stuck i better lose the helmet fast before starting any sort of digging or what not.
