Staged at Morrissey today...trail was in way better shape than I thought it would be after the monsoon Tuesday/Wednesday.

Rode along Leech Ridge and dropped into a couple of cirques...found some half decent snow above 6000 ft but almost everything below that was fairly firm wind-packed with a crusty layer...It was sunny most of the afternoon so it was a pretty good day overall. We will be heading to a different area tomorrow in search of softer snow. Elevation is the key...anything below 6000 ft is not so great and most areas have been wind affected.

We found much better snow today.

East facing slopes at approx 6500 ft were super nice...very predictable...smooth, creamy, non cohesive snow with about mid shin boot penetration and a good base underneath. Snow quality degraded quite a bit with only a 3 or 4 hundred foot drop in elevation on south or west facing slopes. The difference in snow quality in such a short distance/elevation was quite amazing. I may have had my best ride of the season...pulled off 99% of my intended maneuvers. LOL.

I left Thursday afternoon last week, looking at the ski hill snow fall it showed 30cm, 15cm, 20cm.. days before, though it could not be better, rode ice crust snow for the next two days, few nice pockets of snow, but few, kids skiing said Saturday was as icy as it could get, sounds like big winds and warm, lots of rain.. just wish the ski hill would tell the truth.. would of never went

I've watched this over the years as well. I think its a marketing ploy to get people to come to their ski hill instead of somewhere else. There is no way they get more snow than Revy as you and me will agree. yet Revy usually shows less snow than Fernie most of the year on the ski reports.

If your looking for official records for snowfall, this is the site to check.

https://aqrt.nrs.gov.bc.ca/Report/Show/Snow.2A06P.Automated Snow Weather Station Graph/

Not defending the ski hill's snow reports at all, but Revelstoke Mountain Resort and Fernie Alpine Resort are the polar opposites for the regions general snowfalls. FAR generally has a much higher snowfall than most of the surrounding region and RMR is generally quite a bit lower than the surrounding region.

The FAR snow study plot is 750 ft elevation below the Morrissey snow study plot and almost always has a much higher snow pack...this elevation difference is critical for snow-pack evaluation as the Morrissey sight rarely sees rain during the winter...the same cannot be said for the FAR snow study location, it definitely sees rain during the winter. The Morrissey site is just across the valley from the ski hill and just under 10 Km as the crow flies.

Yea I go buy the riding areas. I have never seen the snow in Fernie that I see at Boulder or Frisby. Not even close.

Look up two posts^^^^^^^...lol.

Not gonna tell my secret spots...but If you don't have any secret spots that are East facing, wind protected and above 6500 ft, you're probably not going to find good snow.

HA Ha Ken, the ski reports, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
You know I was at Fernie for a long long time and have spent 80 days a year some years on that ski hill. Built a lot of race courses there. They have good and bad (not so hot yet this year) When they report machine groomed and packed powder you know it hasn't snowed in a while. lol
I ski at Revy now and they for sure get more snow. Elevation makes the difference. To much of Fernie is below the rain line.
Whats even better is Castle mountain reports they get more snow than either of them.

Sledding hands down better in Revy/Sicamous in my experience. Have lots of fun in Fernie area as well

Haven't had any snow here in weeks though

Looks like some snow is in the forecast for the first weekend of February. Which would be excellent since my group and I will be there for a week. Does anyone know of any downloadable gps files I could upload into my inreach for the fernie riding areas?

If I had a dollar for each time I've said "If it was only two degrees colder..." or "If the valley was 3000 ft higher...", I would be a rich man...LOL

yes Craig Morris and his site was redtree the real fernie ski report. He went out for at least one trip around the mountain every day. Heiko didn't mind it when he owned the hill but once RCR (Real Crooks of the Canadian Rockies) came and destroyed Fernie they took exception to him telling the truth.

The ski hill was reporting 191 (close to 7 ft) cm of base last week. I think their snow station is around 1400 m? I took this at about 1700 m just a few clicks from the ski hill on the same day. Barely 4 ft.

I think the ski hill is using the same measurement scale that I use with my wife!
