Also i have no idea about there influx of money-but even if they do maybe this money is for maint during the non trail pass collecting season to keep them going.

sledder if its in the clubs best interest to do the bare miminum and loose memberships as a result then there doing a great job. And you don't have to go out east for nice groomed trails go to sicamous or revy where they groom almost daily to insure people are happy and as a result they're memberships are soaring who wouldve thought...

These other towns also have different industries and cultures which will play a big part in volunteers,help from the towns and residents,supporting buisnesses, ect ect...
The idea some had down there to start another club IMO is not the answer. More poeple need to be involved with the exsisting club.

That's just it there was tonnes of support for these guys but it was rejected and maybe people should look into these clubs and get facts before they type

Agreed. I believe we are both on the same page on that problem. Also i wouldnt be suprized if we name the same person as the problem one. I will not throw out the name on here though.

IMO though i still believe Fernisnow is doing a great job with what he is given to work with.

I have ridden many times in Sicamous, Revy, Nelson, Fernie and as much as it is nice to ride the recently groomed trail, there are many days its not smooth and it ends up being whooped out and horrible to ride.

Everything from lack of recent fresh snow, amount of sleds travelled, to morons who feel the need to spin around every corner and trench up the trail everytime they stop is more of the problem then the clubs not grooming.

It can't always be perfect however if more can be done shouldn't more be done in these problem areas?

why don't they try to groom tuesday saturday and sunday i don't mind paying trail fees at all and for that matter why not raise them by 5 bucks a go put the extra in the kitty if that works. if it get's used oh well. if the speed was controlled and if guys would do 30mph instead of ripping and trenching the piss out of everything the guy running the groomer would at least have a little easier job maybe policing like yellowstone has is the answer and extra $$ for the club.

I was going to let this go but with this statement I have to clarify a point or two.
There is tons of support. The "support" that was rejected was not "support" but rather a group/individual with no grooming experience that wanted to control the grooming. It wasn't working and was rejected by the membership.
As stated earlier, we groom Mondays and Fridays and more for holidays and special events. The membership votes on policy and procedural changes that are brought forth.

With regards to having lots of money, we have a new cabin to build (estimated costs in the neighborhood of $100,000 in real dollars including building/de-commissioning the road, materials, transport, and labor). That is another story that has caused dissension but has been voted on and approved by the membership.

Get involved and get working. Wanna come out and spend some hours in the groomer, PM me and I'll set it up and maybe after proper training sessions, you can have a part-time job like me.

I appreciate the clarification fernie snow I'm good on the grooming but will gladly help your club in anyway I can post when you start building the cabin lots of skilled peeps can shave down labor costs

Avalanches this weekend in fernie. i think the area is called migilvery or something the first right off the coal creek road. it was about two feet deep in the trees and was about at least 100 ft across scary stuff keep safe out there no one was hurt

Had a great weekend in Fernie. Trail in was a bit rough, but the great snow made up for it. Rode up to the notch yesterday. Windy up their!!

Controlling speed? How do you forsee this happening?

And raising trail fees? You do realize how many people freaked out when they raised the Revy and Sicamous rates. It was like the world had come to an end. $16,000 sled, $50,000 truck, $10,000 trailer and to pay $20 to ride in on a maintained trail and use (leave your garbage at, use all the chooped wood) a clube maintained cabin holy crap! Thats unreal was the response.



it appears Fernie is getting some fresh! Was on the other side yesterday Castle towards the Flathead...lots and lots of sluffing and pretty good evidence of earlier large sides that crossed the trail.

Everyone seems to complain about the trails. Sometimes they are rough, and it sucks, but these guys can't be everywhere. Anytime I've been out in the Fernie area, I rarely see people collecting fees/permits, etc. I go out of my way to find somewhere to donate to the club for their efforts in not only grooming, but maintaining a cabin, putting their time in for grooming, buying the machine, paying for fuel, maintainence, repairs, etc, as well as their time in keeping all the political stuff as bay so we have a place to ride.

I'm a flatlander, but in my younger years, I did operate a groomer for a few years. It's a thankless job. You go out in the middle of the night to areas where there is zero cell reception. Get a breakdown and you can be in big trouble. Some days we would groom, the next day a wind would pickup and our trail would be blown over. In the late 90's, when we worked it out, we couldn't afford a groomer. It was cheaper for us to rent a groomer from a local club for close to $100 per hour and we supply fuel and an operator. At 5-6 mph, barring no breakdowns or issues, every pass of the groomer we made was a few thousand dollars. Here in Fernie, I would assume they are grooming 30 miles a trip. I'm sure it costs them more than $100 an hour to run this thing with a volunteer operator now, so we're looking at atleast $600 a trip assuming he can maintain 5 mph....or $1200 a week. At $5 or $10 a trail pass, you need to find either 240 or 120 riders a week to pay up just to cover the grooming operation..sounds easier said than done when guys hit Fernie from multiple staging areas and likely still make use of the trail and the cabin.

Trail life completely comes down to how long the trail can setup for, what temperature it's setting up at, and how aggressive everyone is at riding it. Warmer days, the trail may never setup and it will only take a few machines to completely washboard it out. Cold days, you can have a nicely setup trail that will live considerably longer without much damage. My experience is the people who complain most about the condition of the trail are the ones who are usually to the bars around every corner.

I know FS and it doesn't take long to realize how much pride he has in doing a good job grooming. You can tell he's not doing this for himself, but for the enjoyment of everyone coming out the the area to ride. The guys are doing the best job they can with what they've got. This is one of those things that we are so spoiled by it, we don't realize how good we actually have it until it's gone.

I have been coming to Fernie to ride for 6 years we always drive out Sunday so we can ride Mon to Fri. That is why I have an issue with how this pans out first off the town of Fernie or the RM should pay a staff member to groom the trails twice a week Mon and Fri and if needed or able a volunteer from the club could groom Sat night. Why do I say pay someone to do it in 6 years I have been coming out very seldom is the trail groomed. The town of Fernie and the Chamber of Commerce should take a bigger stake in creating a what is my opinion a sledders paradise. The benefits are big for the community and anyone in buisness knows this. I don't have an issue with volunteers doing what they can we bought passes this week like we always do in the hope that the situation improves. The condition of the trail is not solely the responsibility of the club and Ferniesnow the town needs to step up. Just my two cents in the hope that things improve.
