FernieHawk what year of f150? How far you driving? I'm doing about 2.5-3.5 hours to varying areas. But occasionally (2-3 times a season) 5-6hrs depending on roads. I currently have a Tacoma pulling a 2 place and my thinking is that it will be way safer with a deck and all the weight on a track.

2011 Reg Cab, 8 foot box, 8 foot deck, 4x4, HD with towing package.

Ive had this set up for four years now and it works awesome, very nicely balanced in the 8' box Regular Cab format. I have no experience with an F150 HD Super cab, but in my opinion my regular cab long box set up is better balanced than my friends 2500 short box with a 7' deck.

I mainly use it local around Fernie but I have made 5 or 6 trips to Revelstoke over the last 4 years. It works great on the long trips...no problem.

I have also had to perform a few emergency maneuvers on my trips to Revelstoke...a few minor deer dodges and one major Elk dodge. The Elk dodging was a very close call...full emergency braking from 110 kph down to maybe 70 or 80 and then a full on emergency lane change onto the oncoming shoulder...missed the Elk by that much...(fingers squeezed together). Anyway...after saying holy **** a few times my mind went back to the crazy maneuver and I thought, holy ****...the truck handled that like a champ. I was very impressed.

Remember this is a regular cab long box...results will vary for super cab short boxes.

The age old debate rolls on I see. At the end of the day it's you that is assuming that the risk and liability, if you are overloaded and have a wreck, good luck with your insurance. Do your research and if you have a new Reg cab or even Ext cab long box 1/2 ton, chances are you'll be fine on the scale anyways. It's the idiots with 174's on 6' decks and no extensions that scare me, regardless of whether it's a 1/2, 3/4, or 1 ton. With that much weight behind the rear axle you have lost half of your vehicles handling capabilities, good luck avoiding a moose or a wreck when you've only got 1000lbs of front axle weight, idiots.

Well with a Cummins diesel in my truck front end weight isn't really an issue. Still use a trailer though. 1/2 T with a V6 equipped with deck and two mountain sleds would be something to see even if it was in the weight range. Not sure how that would be possible though.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it doesn't really matter if your sleds are 155 or 174, the weight ends up pretty much in the same place on your truck.

New sleds r so light compared to old iron or quads. 2 xm s on the deck can barely feel them on there . U put 2 apex up there u will know it . Ya those short decks r funny 8 foot min . My last truck had 10 foot deck was the best.
