Hi guys and gals. I would like it to become standard for those that have dual channel radios to monitor FRS 16 for emergency use only. This would be similar to the marine channel 16 and could also be used for getting a hold of other groups before moving to a different channel. I think FRS 16 would better than 9 as the power output for 9 is restricted to 1/2 watt. I have over 500 dual channel radio out there now and lots have bought elsewhere as well so I think there are enough out there now to make this worthwhile.

Let me know what you guys (and gals) think.

Great Idea

IMO a 1/2 Watt FRS channel isn't gonna be very effective, range wise.

Can we settle on a VHF frequency?
140-160mhz range.

People with the FRS the channels can't monitor two frequencies at once either.......
So who would be listening?

Good idea!

For those that have dual band radios, FRS 16 is Frequency 462.575. Correct?

For emergency contact info for my Spot Messenger, I include the radio channel our group uses.

I would rather use a VHF channel as well but too many people run FRS radios to not use an FRS channel IMO. Our SAR group carries BCA as well as FRS radios when on sled tasks.

exactly, to many people are using rino and BCA. Even with only 1 watt output the better whip antennas will pick them up farther away.

"FRS 16 is Frequency 462.575. Correct?" yes and make sure you aren't using any sub channels.

We would, that is the point. If they get into trouble that their group can't deal with then they might be able to call for help on FRS 16

But say you get in trouble Ray would you want not want to broadcast on the channel with the most throw?

If you are only in the backcountry with a frs radio you are I'll prepared imo.

Just sell them the appropriate radio........

I see more VHF radios on the hills now that not.

In theory this is a good idea, Imo the frs channel is the way to go based on more users. For my group the rhino is what we use and usually have at least 2 in reach devices. I leave my VHS in the truck.

Ray, you have to remember that push to talk basic radios have been in the mountains for many years, BCA just expanded on that experience and hit the marked hard and tons of peeps are running that system.
I agree, you cant help everyone.
Pick a channel for your radios and possibly a back up for FRS.
I have both and know the distance of yours is superior.
This is a great idea. Simulator to the CB days where channel 9 was Emergency.

Yes this is a great idea but I think it should be up to BCSF to decide what channel and frequency. Have you contacted anyone on the board?

The radio its self is capable of 2W and used to be advertised as such, but I see they pulled that from their website.

Not a single channel on those radios are programmed above 1W.

I can't understand why people continue to spend more money on these.

If you get burried in the trees, no one will ever hear you unless they can see you.

Think about that while you are throwing your UHF radio in the garbage.

FRS 15-22 are the same frequency as GMRS 1-8. For the radio I have sold if you punch in 016 it will show up as GMRS2 which is the same as FRS 16

Hey Ray.
So I know nothing about Radios.
Last year I bought a BCA. Which is good
This year I bought one of yours. Now I need to learn how to use it.

I think mine is an 82. So will GMRS2 work on mine as well for FRS16?

Also how do I change the frequency for different logging roads? Or is it only the preset channels I get to use?

Preset rr channels for logging roads, every road has sign at bottom saying what rr it is
