a different perspective......Germany destroyed/removed/demolished any Nazi memorials, etc after Hiltler's regime fell because they did not want future Nazi supporters to have place to gather and yet with all that "history" destroyed the world still remembers.

Removing monuments does not remove history....it happened...its real...but it is now unacceptable in todays society. But there are people who still believe that it is still ok to promote the confederate flag even though it stands for hate and racism....in fact the KKK adopted that flag back in the 50's.
Many feel the Robert E Lee statue is also a symbol of racism and America's slave-holding past - but white supremacists and neo-Nazis disagree. This statue has become a shrine and gathering place for these groups who promote hate. With the statue removed, American history won't disappear...its was real...it really happened but destroying it takes away a monument that is today being glorified by the wrong groups. Why glorify or promote hatred?

So, go ahead...flame away....

Its more than statues and pictures Cat. Its the start of something big where the left is slowly taking away our freedoms and freedom of speech. They are globalist and want the world to all be one mellow melting pot with one ideal and no hurt feelings. I say fawk off.

I agree the left has been trying to remove some of our freedoms but in this case standing up for freedom means siding with white supremacists and Nazi supporters....I can't condone their stand. What you do is your choice

I absolutely do not condone even the existence of white supremacists but I do agree with the Donald in that the left has to take some heat as well for what happened that day. Normal protesters don't go to a protest wearing ninja outfits and carrying baseball bats. There are extremists on the left as well as the right

Funny thing about Antifa. A CNN host today compared them to American soldiers fighting Nazi Germany in WW2. I guess all those people that were beaten up and maced at Trump rallies and demonstrations at Berkeley were white supremists as well ? And fake news wonders why no one watches there network anymore?

You mean pretend like the rebel flag wasn't the banner of the south who fought for slavery doesn't (and never did) exist? It is just a symbol that was on the General Lee who were great good old boys. Or are you asking if everything related to the pre civil war south should be forgotten, torn down and otherwise removed because they were "bad people" (Well maybe hombres if Trump is speaking).

HV is correct I think but if the continued presence of these objects serves to rally people to the cause of returning to some form of slavery/white supremacy then that is a problem. The challenge is that you really can't run away from what happened particularly as it is so well documented.

Germany does not skip over any of its history. They are very blunt and factual about what a cluster F¿{k I that part of their history was. The Nazi death camps have been turned into memorials for those murdered there. That is not happening in the southern US where prejudice continues to be a real problem. Assh@les like David Duke are a dime a dozen. In the southwest it is the Hispanics who see the brunt of the prejudice.

Many parts of the southern states have real issues. They need to recognize it for what it is and removing statues and memorials won't change anything.

If anything tearing down statues will only add to the hate in my opinion? The people that follow that ideology still are getting pretty revved up I would assume over it? Myself? I just hate seeing our freedoms disappear one by one. The world is becoming to politically correct from a left agenda.

I agree tearing it down and trying to wipe the slate clean won't work in our lifetimes anyway. As far as a loss of freedom goes, really the only freedom you would be losing is to be a racist neo Nazi, KKK member etc. which we would all be better off without. Every time you have any extreme group who are vocal and pushy, you usually wind up with an opposite but equally extreme group on the other side of the argument. We would all be better off and happier without both.

I personally think it is up to each community if they want to keep the statues or not. This is not our history (the majority of the people posting on this forum are Canadian). We were not involved in the US confederacy and most of our ancestors were not either. None of our ancestors were slaves, and most likely none of our ancestors died on either side of the civil war. People in these communities have deep emotions about these statues, because of why they were built and by whom (something most of us could not ever understand). The people in these communities should be the ones to choose how they want to show their history, not us.

Anyways I don't think you have to worry too much about erasing history. If you like history check out "Hardcore History" http://www.dancarlin.com/

Read Alabama is passing a bill to stop any destruction of historical artifacts and displays right now. Saw on Tucker Carlson on FOX tonight a black CNN correspondent who is calling for George Washington and Thomas Jefferson to go under the knife as well. I guess they are gonna have to change the name of the Capital city now. What a load of hooey.

Mark my words America is close to an all out civil war. Things are getting crazy down there. Never has there been this much division in the country since the civil war. Every news station, every talk show, every late night show, every movie star............nothing but division. People are losing their jobs because they voted for Trump and now his own party is abandoning him. The swamp will not drain.

I wasn't planning to get involved in this thread, but do have a question: at a very basic level, is there a difference between the southeners considering black people less human, an object that can be purchased and sold, exploited through forced labor and even murdered without fear of punishment by the law vs the Nazis doing the same with Jews and anybody who didn't share their world view?
