Alright boys & girls as I am sure you all know we love our sledders, sled boarders & sled skiers ... this started to get real for us when we saw the map of the area MWHS is trying to control & holy doodle with the help of the BC government no less. The fact that MW could potentially charge us with trespass for taking the Grand-kids up the hill to get water totally blows my friggin mind. This will affect our lively hood as well as take away all the most wonderful people we have met & got to know over the past 10 years, as I am sure you all know we love winter tourism. I am attaching the map & a statement from BRPP it shows the whole gist of what MW is trying to do us & to Blue river. As a small business owner with no investors we have struggled & worked our asses off to make this place the best it can be with what we had. We rely on the winter to carry us all through to the summer. What pisses me off the most is someone trying to tell me WTF I can do in my own backyard & I cannot imagine how the people in Blue river feel. I am not taking this & I refuse to accept anything less than what we have now. Really at this point I say this is totally unacceptable for Canadian’s to have crown land given to a private organization for their own use and benefit. What it comes down to is 1.2 million acres handed to MWHS for his own use. Here is the link for the petition https://www.change.org/p/michele-humphrey-stop-mike-wiegele-eight-peaks-proposal

I am trying to get clarification if this image floating around (big red blob) is the current tenure held by MWH or part of the 8 peaks proposal? The blob states that it is his current tenure. The red blob is much larger than the 8 peaks around Blue River. I am wondering if the red blob is his current tenure, which if so, would not change anyones current operations i.e could not charge you for getting water..

This comment is not to do with the 8 Peaks proposal, but I want to clarify what that big red blob is.

Sorry but I'm talking about the big red blob in the original post. From what I can tell, the lease area discussed in the 8 Peaks, while still very large and controversial, does not near cover his entire tenure (i.e. big red blob) or the area near Bone Creek.

I still think this is ridiculous, but I want to be 100% sure of the land we are talking about here.

Yes I understand that. But the red is his current tenure that he has held for a long time. The newly discussed "lease" idea developed in the 2003 8peaks SRMP is only around the community of Blue River from what I can tell. Still researching..

His current tenure? Wish I had quarter of his "pull" power. Must be nice...

How do tenures work?
Is there different classes?

Some the general public can access others they get charged with trespassing?

Well Mike Weigele is a millionaire Heli- Ski company. The unfurnate thing is he is not even caandian. Now he has lots of money to lobby the government with and to pay lawyers.
So this is why Varda and B.C. snowmobile Federation try to get as many people signed up each year as they can. So for less than 300.00 you could be putting money into the hands of people fighting this millionaire. And it would also show that in great numbers of how many other people enjoy these great mountains not just one guy making millions and then taking that money out and not giving back to support the towns.
So don't just sign this portion, sign up for a membership to a bc sled club. That will go a long way to helping the cause.

Tenures for the most part do not provide any exclusivity. They just allow a company to work on crown land and charge a fee, then in turn, they pay a fee to back to the government for use of the land. A tenure does not block public access to any land. To guide on crown land, you are required to apply for and hold a valid tenure. For example, Frozen Pirate has a tenure and that is how we are allowed to legally operate.

The "red blob" is where MWH is allowed to Heli Ski i.e. his tenure. Much of the red blob falls within other restrictions as well like motorized closures, or wildlife closures etc. The government has a few tools that they use to stop "non-compatible" activities as seen in their minds....not really a fan of this, but that is the way things are for now.

What MWH is asking for is a LEASE on a few local mountains around blue river which is completely different than a tenure. Kind of a strange idea and I dont know all the specifics and will not pretend to, but I am quite interested in this, as public access to land is a right I hold very dear.

Ride safe.

Is Mike himself even involved in the operation anymore, last I heard he was not in good health at all?
I met the man once in the alpine years ago back in Westridge came across a heli sitting at the bottom of the 95, pilot standing beside it powered down, waiting on two skiers to get down to the lake! Mike was one of the skiers!we stopped and visited for 1/2 hour or so! It was interesting to meet him!

So would this be precident setting then if a private tour company got a private lease on crown land?

Will every catski/heliski outfit be trying for this now?

Valemount and Blue River can only manage so many riding areas, then it isn't feasible. You can ride any unmanaged crown land as long as it isn't closed to sledding because of Caribou habitat or Heli / snowmobile tour tenures.etc.

It takes a lot of work to get approval to open an area for a club.
