Yup they sure are playing it up as hard as possible to make it seem dramatic. Only two things ever happened there - a long since closed copper mine in the early 1900's, and a mass murder by some guy that went nuts in '83. Other than that, just a boring middle of nowhere off the grid everyday village in Alaska. A one or two hour special more than covers that place.

I loved the way he finished that story. He says " so after I pissed on his face , I got my gun and shot him. I mean, what else are you gonna do with a bear after you piss on his face".
