this is the reason

  • British Columbia receives a fair share of the fiscal and economic benefits of a proposed heavy oil project that reflects the level, degree and nature of the risk borne by the province, the environment and taxpayers.

Why should BC get profits from the oil in the pipeline? Alberta doesn't get a share of the lumber profits that travel through Alberta.

fargineyesore take the time to read all the illegal stuff Redford did in the link I posted. Oh and by the way she is back as a consenus builder what ever the hell that is. No doubt prime minister fluff or knothead are behind this. Need an honest person to do what ever the hell she is planning on doing with your tax payer dollars.

i agree with the writers point of view as it makes total sense. But, if a province is expected to allow a pipe line to be built then someone whether it is the federal or provincial government should partake in some sort of profits as I can't imagine any company exposed to a billion dollar clean up or more to be ready to cut a cheque for it. My gut feeling is that tax payers will be on the hook to some extent. No different than a road tax in many jurisdictions to off set road maintenance etc.

I used to think of George W Bush as being a stupid man especially when he said several years ago that he would not take vaccines from Canada because it was a Third World Country. But I was wrong and he was right....how did he know this? Wow what a visionary he was.

You can ship all your lumber across bc and onto the ships for free. Just you are going to have to pay for crossing with the oil. But hey if you can get knothead to negotiate with all the natives and get it done for free without paying something ...go for it.

how are we starting to sound like Quebec? Just because we want to make sure we don't see an Exxon Valdez or a BP deepwater Horizon oil spill in our province makes us sound like Quebec. These oil spills were not supposed to happen but they did causing billions in damage and devastating environmental damage so what is wrong with making sure any pipeline installed in our province does not repeat that. There is no such thing as 100% safe so we have to minimize these risks by insuring these companies follow the rules.

There are lumber mills in Alberta too you know.

Anyway, it's sad that it has come to a division between BC and Alberta.

BC is starting to sound like Quebec.

You said earlier that you're in favor of a pipeline as long as its done safely? Not being a dick, but what does this mean?

All these major pipelines are constructed using the highest standards in the world. They are also "smart-pigged" to monitor corrosion and have "cathodic protection" to fend corrosion.

yes definitely in favour but like many people in BC who are in favour of the pipelines we want to make sure our voices are heard that we will not tolerate any short cuts doing so. Therefore, just because we are voicing these concerns we sound like Quebec? That is what I was commenting about. I know the standards are high but when a company goes "unmonitored" crap happens. Look at what happened a couple years ago at Mount Poly mine. That is what we need to avoid.

Thank goodness trains & trucks shipping oil is 100% safe....
what an absolute ludicrous conservation this is .....
Yes I know you want facts .... Well there was a town in Quebec....!!

This is about money lets at least be honest, not environmental safety ..... Because if the main concern was really about safety , they would be building the pipeline as I type ! And stopping shipment of oil by train along thousands of miles of pristine waterways....!!!!

What short cuts are you referring to? Unmonitored? This does not happen in Canada like it does stateside. Not saying we've never had a pipeline rupture here, but it is a rarity up here due to strict policies put in place by the NEB, which controls interprovincial pipelines across Canada. In Alberta we have the AER as the provincial body governing activity within our borders, with our own set of rules. How does a tailings pond breach at a mine corelate to a pipeline leak? There are fail safes called ESDs installed at intervals along mainline pipelines that electronically monitor for a pressure change(drop) and the valves close automatically. Yes a spill is possible but a brand new pipeline will be low on the risk scale.

What he said !!!! This whole danger of pipelines thing is a crock. It's about the money and a silly feeling of envy and jealousy of the good fortunes Alberta has enjoyed for the last while , cause of oil and gas. Totally fixated on this one issue , like chasing one fox through the bush while the rest are in the chicken house feasting.
