Drop & Roll

Could someone please explain to me what a "drop & roll" kit is/does? Pictures would be great too. There's been some chatter about this recently, and I'm always looking to fill my database with more info.

It is relocation of the jackshaft and driveshaft lower and further back to allow the use of larger drivers or taller track, one of the biggest benefits is that it reduces the track attack angle and improved effeciency of the larger drivers

bingo pretty much has it except that most drop and rolls now leave the jackshaft alone and lengthen the chaincase to achieve the better attack angle and more tunnel clearance.

That is not really a drop and roll, just an extended chaincase. Drop and roll is an old school mod.

If the drop and roll approach is so effective, why do the manufacturers make it stock? For that matter, why not belt drive replacing the chain case?

doo basically did that with the extended chain case, the downside with lowering the driveshaft is that it puts the drivers below the bottom of the tunnel and can be bent easily if you hit a rock or stump. So from a mass manufacturing standpoint it would decrease overall durability. With the newer sleds being much taller than the older ones it is hard to get a nice approach angle while keeping the drivers protected

I believe the new Mountain Cat is an extended chaincase also...not a true drop and roll

moved the drivers down and away from the cooler giving more clearance for the larger lug track, and to improve the approach angle of the track.

Didn't it expose the drivers more though, as they hang out the bottom further? More open to impact?

Bigger drivers and hanging to far down you can break them on a whooped out trail if going to fast.
Extended a little bit like Doo did is fine . IMO

If you want to see some of the best drop and rolled sleds around pop into Mountain Magic and see Ken, haven,t seen better and more durable work than his yet. He is in the process of finishing a Polaris Pro. Looks and im sure will run like a beast like his usually do.
