Ski-Doo makes a great sled but shitty motors

Everyone I know that has had a Summit has had to rebuild there engines over the past 10 years

Different sleds we had
2000 - Summit 700 - 4500km - new engine - 2005 - $2100.00 - Sold in 2007 at 6500km
2000 - Summit 700 - 6500km - new jugs and pistons - 2006 - $1750.00 - Sold in 2007 at 8500km
2000 - Summit 700 - 8500km new engine - 2006 - $2500.00 - Sold in 2007 at 10,500km

2007 - Summit 800R - 4500km - new engine - 2011 (March) - $3500.00 - 0km on new engine

When you pay $15,000.00 for a sled the F_cking engine should last!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We must be fools as we are now riding 5 summits - which equals - 5 x $3000.00 = $15,000.00 in new engines in the new 3 years - DA - are we stupid to stay with Ski-Doo

If your ride a Ski-Doo Summit factor in $1000.00/year of riding for engine rebuilding
Which is probably just under $1.00/km riden for engine repairs

As said before everyone that rode a Summmit has had to rebuild it at least once...

WE NEED A POLL on this thread to record BLOWEN engines and get the facts straight. It is the engines that are failing and in most cases it is NOT the operator
- Poor engine design
- poor pistons
- poor rings
- poor coating on cylinder walls
- poorly installed crank bearings

Again not every rider is a butcher but every Factory Summit will Fail........

I bet that you could put more km on a rebuilt/shortblock than you can on a factory engine....

ummmm by looking at your milage there yoour doing pretty good not sure what your complaining about

8500km on a 2stroke engine?

what are you expecting?

i think you should buy 4 stroke if you want 10,000+km out of your sleds

weve got kitties in our family and they have been good aswell. but 8500km is even a stretch for the infamously indestrucable cat

Switching brands? Maybe switch to polaris then read some of the post on here about all the dragons and pro 800 motors that are blowing up under warrenty still and having a hard time with polaris covering them. This might be a dumb question but where do you store your sled? Mr'rs just had a 06 rev in that wasnt running and guess what they found? The intake and airbox was full of dog food cause the owner stored it in a shed and the mice loaded it up. The top of the pistons were covered in mangled up dog food. Something to consider if you store it outside. I just blew the motor on my 09 xp up in revy on sunday and wasnt pissed at all. 2900 km of hard riding and now 860 here i come.:d

My sled is stored in my back shed . I've seen the mice thing as well they filled my skates that were in my hockey bag which was hanging from the rafters. Craft little buggers. As for blowing up after 2900km I can't totaly agree with you I would still be pissed there is no reason why sled now day can't get at the least 5000km before a blow up. AS for polaris/ cat/ yamaha i really dont have a clue what direction I would go. Don't get me wrong I still love my sled but I just hate when stuff goes down. I know its the price of owning a two stroke. You have pay to play.

My 2002 MXZ 700 has 7400kms. My 2007 800 P-tec Renegade has 5500km. Both have been used in the mountains and the trails around Athabasca. I never fog anything and I never start them in the summer.
I use BRP mineral oil in the 800 and I use Castrol oil in the 700.
I guess I might be lucky, but I have had ZERO engine troubles with both sleds. The head bolts needed to be changed on the 700 cause they rusted out on the shank. Had to do some other work but have not touched the engines on either machine.

Borrowed time? Maybe, but at this point, I 'll take it !

Very true, sure im dissappointed but good thing it happened on sunday.lol. I have been riding for a long time and 95 percent of the time in revy where it is normally deep and the sled gets put throught the ringer all day. I based my mileage on where and how hard i ride. Yours might be different. Good luck any advise would be drop in an 860.:d

Fyi it was snow that got by the maxipad that skidoo decided to put on the 09 that scored the pistons. The dambed thing never even fell out just slid back enough to let snow into the intake.

shell AND husky premium has ethanol, but it doesn't hurt to have a tank of ethanol every now and then as long as you run a tank of none ethanol premium after. too lazy to read the whole thread so i dunno what's been said, just figured this should be mentioned.

Shell Gold or V-power 91 octane contains NO ethanol, it is posted right on the pump. If it does they are guilty of FALSE advertising and should be dealt with accordingly.:nono: I only run Shell Premium and have never had a problem so I will keep using it. Both lower grades contain up to 10% ethanol according to the sticker on the pump.

i was informed other wise by bassani fuels. who haul fuel for both the husky refinery and the esso refinery. not to run husky premium, the told me shell to, i know esso tried to use their requirements of ethanol in the higher populated areas to save us northerners. i was just repeating what I was informed of. not tryin to start anything.

but i did some research and v power, does contain nitrogen, i'm not sure of the effects.

nitrogen is an inert gas, it does nothing. 78% of every breath you take is composed of nitrogen. There is no harmful effect from using nitrogen enriched fuels.

Oh please don't take my post the wrong way, if there really is ethanol in it I want to know cause I don't want to use it, on the other hand it is all I have run since 03 and I have never had a problem so I guess if it does have it so far it has not had a negative effect for me. Ug now I'm confused. Anyone work for Shell? Clear this up please.
