Dodge 6.7 high idle when cold

I have a 2008 dodge 3500 with the 6.7 cummins. Completely stock. Went down to -8 on the weekend . I started it this morning and the truck immediately went into high idle when started? Is this normal without normal idling first for at least a minuete first. You would think it would give a little time before high idle kicked in? Please help.

My '10 did the same thing so I think it's the way they work.

They high idle pretty quick. My 5.9 does anyways

Normal. My 08 Cummins did it, so does the 13.

so does my 07 .. also a little trick is turn on the exhaust break while warming it up … it warms up faster

Yes high idle comes on quick. Even parked running it will idle up itself. Exhaust brake on turn cruise on and press set.

And if you hit accel it should go up in 100 rpm increments.

Normal, hold your foot on the brake to stop the high idle on startup, if it's cold enough it will resume high idle right away after taking your foot off the pedal.

phew, good to know it's not just my truck doing it. I guess that's just the way it is. You would think higher rev when it's I've cold wouldn't be good but I guess cummins and dodge knows what they are doing.

They don't all do this right out of the box. I had to get the dealer to program my old 5. 9 way back when.

Yep it goes into high idle right after start up same as my cummins, but comes up to temp way faster and stays there. I find the cummins to drop heat right away if idling and will go back into high idle.


High idle right away won't hurt anything, it's better to increase warm up temps faster and get the oil splashing around more.

The 6.7ho has the manual high idle already from the factory. Anything past 1300 I think will kick out the exhaust brake.

Thanks guys. I tried putting my foot on the brake while starting. High idle did not come on until about 2 min after I started it. It's nice to be able to control this easy now.

After mine starts it will run about 30seconds to a minute before going to high idle. and after a while of driving around and it's good a warm when parked and idlling my normal temp is 93C if it drops down to about 86 it will idle up until 92-93 and idle back down and will continue to do to keep the temp up when cold out
