If you missed a potential sale I would tell him you want to keep it until it sells. If you can't get what you where going to get from him, keep that much of the deposit. If you can get the same money give it all back.
Seems fair to me.
It sucks to be in both shoes if his excuse is real. I mean if he found something he liked better I would tell him to pound sand. But if you know he is no longer looking for another one for whatever reason it would be nice to get it back.
But on the other hand, you were sure it was sold, and it cost you time.

What kind of truck you sellin?
I'm with the others. Give the $$ back, not worth your hassle of dealing with some pissed off guy who is going to go and badmouth you around town to other prospective buyers. It sounds like you had lots of offers or potentials, adjust your ad or call some of the other guys back and tell the buyer backed out, truck is still for sale.
If you don't need the $$ from his deposit, give it back IMO. It'll be a feel good story to tell the next potential buyer that he's dealing with an honest guy. I don't think I'd buy a truck from a guy who said he kept the money.
The old saying of "What goes around, comes around" is very true - good Karma will come back to ya.

no ild just feed the cat to the dog saves the whole gotta kill something deal. explaining to wife kids etc. bullet to kill dog would cost money. etc.
I generally hold things for a guy if it is not a big ticket item and is not financially strapping me without a deposit. Other wise first come first serve.
Depending on how the sale played out and his attitude would consider holding it till the unit is sold or a couple weeks just to make him a bit more wise on his next deals, and for your hassels. I took a deposit once last year on a sled sale from a guy a long ways away after to many commitments were backed out on previously. Ya either want it or dont want it, the deposit helped make his mind up as i took it off the market for him, and the snow was turning to grass.

This whole deposit thing is a joke anyways.
I never take deposit, just for this reason. what was the advantage of it all when you always have to give it back.
I just tell everyone, first one with the cash wins. People seem to get their cash together and hurry back if they really want it, and if not it does not matter because the next guy gets a chance to buy it.

im not a shallow person i hold parts and things for people for months passing up sure sales. that being said my time is valuable and im sure yours is too.

so ifind out today he bought a diff truck so he was playing the field with this deposit thing so we come to a agreement i gave him 400 back he was happy with that i was p/ssed he was playing around

People are too trusting these days. I agree with Maxwell, a deposit is a deposit. If someone gives me some cash to hold my vehicle that is for sale, I consider that the down payment. This is obviously an adult buying this vehicle and if he can't manage his money well enough then tough titties. As far as the ole wife excuse. If it had actually been the wife for real then keep half to teach the guy to stop being a little pu$$y and grab a pair. But as it turned out he was lying all along. There are so many of those douches out there trying to play sellers, it's terrible, especially these days.
