This is always a mater of personal preference but if I pulled a trailer a lot or long distance (to Arizona for example) I would spend the extra and buy the diesel.
I seldom use a truck so it made sense for me to go used. Just happened to land a 96 GMC 3500 with a 7.4 Vortec that has Kenworth air bag suspension (springs completely removed) and it was stored inside with 67,000 KM's. I pull a 33 foot fifth wheel that weighs about 10,500 when loaded with our gear. It is a little slow off the line (mostly gearing) but cruises between 110 - 120 KPH. Gets about 7.5 MPG towing and about 13 MPG empty.
I would not want to pull more weight.
