Been thinking of buying a new truck, and am struggling with whether to buy a gasoline or diesel truck..... A few years ago, the diesel was the way to go, because of the $.30/litre price difference, but now the price difference is within a nickle and the gas engines are getting as good or better gas mileage than the diesels...... You can get high output v-8's that should pull any trailer just as good as a diesel. The big difference is to try and substantiate the $10,000.00 price tag for the "diesel" on any of the big three trucks.......... Also, which to buy, 3/4 ton or 1 ton??? i currently have a '04 f350xlt 4x4 6.0l turbo diesel. What do you all drive for tow rig, and gas or diesel, and auto/manual...... I don't know how to start a "poll" like kittykat man, so maybe lyle could start one for me here???

If the biggest thing you tow is a sled trailer a gasser will work. I will disagree that you will find a gasser that tows as good as a diesel, or that you will find a gasser that gets anywhere near the mileage towing 7-10,000lbs. Having said that if i was not going to keep my truck longer term and didn't tow heavy alot i would consider a gasser. You can work the numbers whichever way you want depending which side of the debate you are on. Keep in mind the $7-10g uprade for diesel/tranny depreciates alot less than the rest of the truck or a gas upgrade.

Just went onto canadian blackbook and checked the price difference of a '05 diesel f350 c/cab vs. A '05 v10 f350 c/cab and there is only $3500.00 difference on a 60000km vehicle. Alternately $10,000.00 difference to buy the vehicles new difference. ??????????? which way do i go??? which way do i go??? i also pull a 27ft holiday trailer, hoping to go to a 5th wheel next year.

I have owned and driven trucks from pickups too big rigs my whole life and let me tell you if your going to pull anything,No question here, diesel all the way.Not only is fuel consumption an issue, think longevity. Diesel motors outlast gas jobs 3 to 1!

I too have a diesel truck but the only thing I pull right now is a 2 place trailer. If I wasn't planning to pickup a 5th wheel I would go to a gas.I would say if you are getting a bigger size hoilday trailer go with the diesel but if you go with a medium size trailer a gasser well to the job just fine.Just remember that if you ever have to repair anything on a diesel engine the cost is quite a bite higher than a gas.

Just my 2 cents

yes, but every 300,000kms i could replace a gas engine and put 3 gassers in in place of the initial diesel engine cost($10,000.00). I guess i have to thank ron for the poll....... Ron, we need another poll showing the gas mileage of gas & diesels??? and gas mileage when pulling trailers??? please?

I also own a '04 6.0 Lariat C/C PSD. After pulling my 27' trailer to Flin Flon MB with it, and my father-in-law pulling his 26' trailer behind his GMC gasser (the big one....6.0?), on the same trip. I can tell you first hand that there is a huge difference in power and fuel milage between a gasser and a diesel while pulling a good sized load, especially if a long pull uphill comes into play.;) :D I just ordered a new 6.4l FX4 C/C; with the black leather interior, on Thursday.:beep: Cause I just can't see me not owning a diesel truck as long as I own a holiday trailer, or am going to be loading 2 sleds on a deck and heading for BC.:beerchug:

I don't pull anything big at all right now. I've got an 8 foot tent trailer, and my 2 place sled trailer. I drive a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4x4 4.0L, I've never owned a deisel and at this time I don't have a use for one. Eventually if I get into bigger campers/sled trailers/boats etc I would probably upgrade to one.

My dad pulls a 2001 19' Trail Lite "hybrid" camper with his 2005 F-150 5.4L 2wd and gets very similar mileage to what he does not towing. Its a tough call, 10,000 is a lot of money for an engine :twocents:

I have an 05 f150 4x4 with a 5.4L and have added dual cat back exhaust, cold air kit and programmer and ya it will pull my holiday trailer and enclosed sled trailer and not even grunt doing it, but when it comes to longevity and serious torque, I don't think that you can beat the diesel. I considered diesel as well however working only about 10-12 blocks from home the the gas engine does not even fully warm up on colder days and everyone knows that short stop and go trips are not the best senario for diesel engines. Just my 2 cents

Own a 04 Dodge diesel dually 1 ton ,05 3/4 ton with a gas Hemi , 07 3/4 with a gas Hemi. Remember forget H.P. numbers it's all about ft. lbs. of torgue. If you trailer heavy and steep the diesel will shine and the gasser will whine. Also remember slowing down in winter conditions with the engine and not the brakes keeps everything straight,Diesel shines again big time. The gasser are much nicer to pump around town in even if you chip your diesel.Rent one of each and give it a try . Good Luck

I have an 03 Dodge diesel, had a gas before that and won't go back. Over 50% of miles on truck are towing fifth wheel or sleds and use the van to run around town. snotrocket is right, its torque and it shows as you're passing all the gas jobs and you're going to get way better milage loaded or unloaded. More money...absolutly. Worth it...absolutly!!

o2 Chev Duramax

I have a 2002 Chev Duramax - Fresh Air Kit and Chipped with slightly larger than stock tires.
Bought it to put lots of miles on. Have hauled a 27 ft regular weight trailer to PEI and back along with many trips to the mountains with sleds. It was "awesome".
I'm not convinced that under load the gasser will get near the milage a diesel will and I have yet to meet anyone who says thier gasser does so at the same price for fuel the diesel should win. Same goes for power, diesel seems to rule in this case.
There is a difference in cost when buying but most people are willing to pay that for power and fuel milage. Many are looking at a longer milage investment as well.
If you purchase a gasser it will be interesting to see how it does against a diesel on a trip side by side. When hauling to McBride two years ago we had two chev diesels, both stock. Mine with 2 on the deck and 2 on the trailer and our buddy with a 4 place and 4 sleds. We pulled 13.5 mpg each for the trip.
Let us know what you decide....guess I'll know anyway....

Justify A Diesel

$10.000.00 difference between a new diesel and new gasser.......... Say there's 4mpg difference fully loaded pulling hard(can't see that much difference, though), and say the fuel price is about $.04 difference(edge to the diesel, but only in alberta) per litre...... You do the math. The diesel would practicaly never pay for itself, especially when you consider blackbook on a 4 year old truck is only about $3000 to $4000 difference between a diesel & gasser. Is anyone able to do the math and figure how long, or what the breakeven point would be in mileage to cover that $10,000.00 difference???

I own a 2003, XLT 4x4 SuperCrew F-150, 5.4L. I love the truck, but the power is limited. I have a 19ft holiday trailer and find that the gas millage is not good when pulling. I would love to get a diesel, just can't justify the cost at this time. My dad has a f-250 diesel, I travel with him when we sled. I am looking to find a decent 2 place trailer to pull in case I ever go riding without him.

If I had the money, I would have a diesel, but than my wife would want a bigger trailer, so it is a truck and a trailer, need to save some more yet.

Great poll by the way!
