Bringing up this old thread. I am building a deck and need some advice. I was gonna go 10x14, ten feet along house than 14 feet out. What size sonotube do I use? Deck is less than 24" from grade. Also how far from house do I put the piles? Guy at Totem said I put at 10' but than my max was 12' as Im only allowed 24" overhang........

Depends what size lumber you use.

well, i think you can span a 2x8 around 8 feet for a deck, so go 6' from house then 12' from house and have a 2' overhang, would look good. best to ask your building inspector to be certain, not a bunch of yahoos on the internet, we can tell you anything you want

building inspector doesn't care, not over height that needs permit so he says do what ya want.

I would look down the road and what could the deck be used for; 4-6 people sitting around, a B-B-Q and table and chairs, possibly eventually a hot-tub (maybe not you but the next owner).....see what I'm getting at?

I would recommend 2x10's minimum at 16" centers. They will span 15' and not have a problem with deflection so the 12' out from the house with the sono-tubes is not a problem. With 2x10's the 2' overhang will not be a problem. If you use a 3 ply 2x10 beam across two 8" sono-tubes that are 10' apart you will be fine.

Maximum Span Calculator for Joists & Rafters ....the spans book can be purchased for 15 dollars it has most of what you need.

I noticed the span calculator doesn't have snow load available. You can download various ones for free. This is from Oregon (I know the snow load isn't there) but it will give you a pretty good idea. http://www.co.josephine.or.us/Files/SPAN CHARTS.pdf

Here is another one; again no specific snow load.

No you will have to purchase a spans book or building code book. As far as metric... i doubt anyone has a metric tape when plywood is in standard....except for its thickness.
