this is a really hard concept aparently. NO MATTER HOW FAR FORWARD YOUR POST IS ON A SKIDOO OR SUMMIT XM IT WILL NEVER BE A VERTICAL STEERING POST.

unless like mentioned above it comes out in front of the headlight.

you CAN NOT have a vertical post on a summit xm without making a hokey pokey linkage setup like on the pro/m series. like look at this fantastic contraption! genious! cant wait to steer one of these boat anchors in a few years when all 900 ball joints are worn out. anyways notice how the post is almost in the veritcal position. this is why the handle bars turn FLAT. now look at the summit xm post. runs on a wicked angle. therefor you get a dip in the bars when you turn. YES you can modify the location of your steering post and even your riser block and position to make it straight vertical. BUT your ALWAYS going to have dip in the bars when turning. rasmussen can modify all he wants but at the end of the day the bars DO NOT turn flat like on a cat or polaris. thaaank goodness!

NOW lets look at bretts post. basically all he did was move it to the forward position and lower it so the sled is closer to his body in technical maneuvers. notice how much the bars are dipped while the sled is turned. THIS is whats going to make him shine. so much more control and leverage in a countersteer sidehill situation.

So there is a top view of that pic Maxwell...I honestly do not know, did he move it further forward than the forward position on the XM? Either way, it appears to equal the 3" post forward mod for the XP, which would put it 1.5" more forward than the XM forward spot I believe.

And yes, it still wouldn't be vertical. :)

thanks. i think your correct.

my theory on him doing this is so that his body weight is so far forward the sled wont wash out on steep deep sidehills.

i dont care what your riding if its a steep pitch and your weight isnt forward your sleds washing out. this will assist with that. especially with the 8" further forward footwells this season

Congratulations maxwell, good job in explaining one of the features that keeps Doo from handling like a true mountain sled in all aspects, climbing, sidehilling, u turning back uphill, steep downhills, and tight slalom situations. This is probably the # 1 reason a lot of mountain riders didn't ever feel really comfortable on the XP, that and the wide stable feeling, that so many are now saying they didn't actually like compared to the XM's new behavior. You'll see a lot of the XM riders with the bars turned way forward on the post which causes the riders position to be more same as the Cat and Poo characteristics, mainly in my mind cause it's a position more favorable to mountain riding and less to trail friendly position. I love the XM and it's best Doo ever, but it's still the feature that needs to be corrected with either a post relocate or cheaper, just lean the bars ahead, both are compensations. Probably more comfortable on the trail or screwing around in fields and such though.

In the past 24 months I have purchased a new M8, Pro and XM, the steering is different in all of them but not once have I had any issues with the different styles slowing me down. If you do then you are a whiner that needs to squeeze the throttle more and flap your gums less. If Doo sponsored a guy like MAXWELL I'd burn that XM faster than he adds useless info to a thread.

Why does this keep happening everyone is so brand loyal ride what's good for you and enjoy your season! This place is turning into a pissing contest in every thread and has sure made me stop by a lot less! I am sure the next keyboard kick boxer will have something to say about how I feel but to each there own!
maxwell thanks for the info on steering post location made me understand the major difference (not bad or good) between the way my pro handheld and how my new doo handles also explains why the two respond differently in similar situations!

As an interesting sidenote on KJ's clapped together mod M-series he converted it to a horizontal post, so there.

That is correct, he did that from the moment he switched on to Cat in 2010. Most of us in the Whistler area prefer horizontal steering, the reason is that you steer with your shoulders rather than your elbows and it allows you maintain a greater position of strength on the sled. Translation: works great for descent lines, jumps and drop, not as easy to put on side so it isn't as good in the trees but when you get used to it, you can make it work. If you've ridden doo for a while, it feels very awkward trying to get used to vertical steering. Until the OEs begin taking input from riders that do more than just one specialized facet of mountain riding, we can keep holding our breath as the best is definitely yet to come.

Way to stand your ground Dan, looking forward to seeing you kill it on a poo! Cheers!-J
