Curious about diesel fuel - looking at a truck swap

How many ml do you add per tank? And where do you find the best pricing on cases? I have an 05 LLY so both our tanks should be the same, 95 litres.
A guy I used to work with was at a fuel seminar a couple years back and talked to several different fuel people and additive people and the one thing they all said was use double what the recommended dose on the bottle says too up here due to the introduction of ULSD. The reccomendations on the bottle are for regular diesel which you can still buy in some states.

Personally I don't measure it. I just hog it in till it looks about right lol.

Howes meaner power cleaner and howes diesel fuel conditioner are very good products.

I have a tuned 6.4l ford with 300,000km.Different diesel is very noticeable for me. I won't run fas gas diesel in winter anymore. I used too but come November it is like wax . I will get 100km less per tank. Husky has been great, esso, petro, shell. UFA hurts my mileage big time.
I will also add "diesel kleen". Once or twice a month. More often in winter and will bring a big jug is traveling stateside. Noticeable idle improvements, Noticeable power, better mileage. A bit more smoke for the tank but not terrible.

Few years back there was an independent test done on Canadian diesel. Pretty sure I posted it up here somewhere. Husky's Diesel Max had the highest Cetane, highest lubricity, lowest wear. Was considered the best diesel. It is sometimes a couple pennies more, sometimes not. I have found a little better mileage from it when I use it.

For additives, i have tried a few. My routine now is once or twice a year I will throw in a bottle of Stanadyne fuel system cleaner, especially if I start seeing black smoke out the exhaust. It does work and well. Can see a reduction/elimination in black smoke after use.

For my old cummins that was not made for the new ultra low sulphur diesel i use the stanadyne lubricity additive. Nothing else

Use 2 stroke out board oil if you are just looking for lube. It’s cheap and easy to find.

What do you guys add for conditioner? I've never put anything in my dmax. Always considered trying Vpower diesel but can never convince myself to when its .15 more at the pump.
I use what ever lol, anything to help lube and condition, just a gulp every tank

Back in 2011 I could tell on my old 6.5 the fuel changed cause egts went up, when they came out with only ultra low sulphur diesel and that's all you can buy

If you have a newer 2011+ duramax, fuel additives are not needed nor recommended if you take the time to read the owners manual. Fuel system is engineered for today's current fuels. Keeping a clean fuel filter should be your number one priority imo.

Don't in a common rail. They just plug the filters up. 2-4 micron doesn't allow the stuff through that actually helps.

That's old high pressure rail and heui stuff. Works good in your 12v Cummins or 7.3 Ford or 6.5 Chevy. Or old farm tractor.

Absolutely.
Don't cheap out on the fuel filter.

I run the the stanadyne in my 13 duramax and I can definitely tell a difference on how smooth it runs with the additive versus no additive. I don't care what the manual says that additive makes my truck run so nice

Good to know! I am to cheap to run anything in my common rail truck so lucky for me lol.

If you plug a 2 micron filter with 2 stroke oil there is something else wrong.

However the zinc additives in the 2 stroke oil can foul fuel injectors, and will foul up a particulate filter with ash that can't be burnt out in a regen.

Regardless it's not an overly intelligent thing to put in a truck that was built to run on ulsd, and good luck getting warranty on it if they find it in the fuel system.

Hey Guys,

I might be moving from a gaser to a diesel as my primary sled hauler and I just wanted to ask if the different grades of diesel at the pumps really make any difference - either in power or cleaning. I know the premium gas can make a big difference in my ecoboost so I am interested to know if a diesel will see any change.
Farm fuel works best.

No. It means your filter is doing it's job. It won't plug solid but repeated use will eventually restrict your filter.

A coffee filter is about 20 micron and 2 stroke oil will barely flow through that to put it in perspective.
