went to Atlas today.. there is new snow.. the road in is a covered but there are still some small rocks under.. its not bad at all... Headed to the cabin.. had nice fire, then headed west, found some good snow in the trees.. Hero deep in a lot of places.. pretty amazing. be cautious on the trail in and out, there are some patches with some more riders through the day that made a couple rocky patches.. however as far as Crowsnest goes, this is some amazing riding this early in the year...

We apologize to all that go out this weekend. we pretty well tracked out the majority of the powder..> But it was absolutely unreal.. over the hood and soft.... Get out there if you are thinking about it.

PS, just a reminder to grab a membership, the Association does so much and provides awesome shelters and trails for us to use.

Hopefully see some of you out there next week!! Merry Christmas Screen Shot 2017-12-22 at 7.12.15 PM.jpg

Rode Atlas the last 2 days, desperately need to have the last snow warm up and settle, once that happens and get another fresh layer it’ll be game on but until then there’s still lots of land mines. Having said that if you know exactly where you are there are some sweet powder spots...some good trail riding with minimal tracks also.

We’re still working out the route details for this year. Once we finalize the route, I’ll try to remember to check back with you and post it here. If I recall, I put about 80 kms on my sled a couple years ago. The ride itself can take as long as you like, as long as you’re back by 4pm to submit your hands.

We’ve had some difficulties getting the info to our website - apologies for that.

It’s a fun ride, in no way is it a race or competition. It is a great event for families to ride in. Also, all sleds have to be registered and insured as this in on public lands and officers have been out in the past, and more than likely present for this year, and they do check for your plate and paperwork.

Thanks,
Cam

Our new years day ride was great.. temps went up and there was about 40cm new snow.. still could use another 50-100cm.. but overall a great day.. Screenshot_20180101-192316.jpg IMG_20180102_091436_410.jpg Screenshot_20180102-091532.jpg went in at atlas and up to the gorge and found some neck deep snow..

A reminder to everyone, when conditions aren't great May be don't sled alone.. we ran into 2 riders riding alone and had to help one get unstuck from under an avalanche shoot.. if we weren't there and it had slide they wouldn't have found him till spring.. please all use your heads.. I know I'm only into my second season but don't under estimate the power or mother nature..

Mike

Hope to see you all out there..

We always hit Calgary then head West but looking to try CNP for the first time. Which riding area would somebody suggest for a guy who likes more meadows & tree-riding Crowsnest seems like a different kinda area where there's not that many trees since you're on the verge of the Prairies but just starting to get into some fairly steep and open faces of the Rockies.

Thanks in advance.

I've always said any of our areas here anyone from 8 to 80 can have a blast...meadows, trees, groomed and untouched trails, climbing etc. You still need to be Avy aware when you're up against the rocks.

Absolutely, we'd be packing all our gear with us. After the snowstorm Calgary got late last week (as did we here in Edmonton) I'd have high hopes for snow conditions down that way. Any updates on snow conditions?

Also, not to be a bother, but if anyone knows of a good hotel/cabin to stay at in the area with a hottub (mandatory), please PM me. Been searching but don't actually see anything in Crowsnest or Blairmore

The conditions right now are great! If you plan to stay right in the pass I would ride from the York Creek staging area as you can access all the south area from it. There used to be a good area map online, but I can’t find it. Prephaps someone else has the link. The map they have up now is pretty vague.

They didn’t get the rain last week like the BC side did. And yes the West Castle and Carbondale areas are still open. We rode from the Carbondale staging area last Friday and the snow conditions were excellent!

Well that all sounds promising then! And yes SnowJunkie I was trying to find a decent map but google seems to come up short in that department. One can assume that they don't see the snow like interior/southern BC does, but still should be plenty for a safe, fun ride.

Conditions might be a little iffy right now, 100kph winds yesterday and back again this morning. Most likely clearing the meadows of any powder and making for some harder drifts...definitely going to increase the cornice presence. I haven't decided where I'm going for a ride today but will update later if I ride the AB side.
