Pair rescued from Crowsnest Pass backcountry

.Cold, wet and without emergency equipment, two snowmobilers had to be rescued after they got stuck while snowmobiling near the Crowsnest Pass.

The pair — a man and a woman from Calgary with limited backcountry experience — left the Atlas staging area northwest of the Crowsnest Pass about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, expecting to be gone for about 90 minutes.

But they ended up getting stuck and when they couldn’t dig the machines out, they decided to try and walk out.

Unfamiliar with the area and without any emergency equipment, the pair had no way to make a fire or build a shelter.

Eventually they made it to an area where they got cell phone reception and managed to phone police.

The Crowsnest Pass Rescue Squad was sent to search for them and the pair were found — cold, wet and complaining of possible hypothermia — just after midnight Sunday.

we've all at one time or anoher made a bad decision or entered a situation without the proper gear..... Just glad to hear they are alright...

I'm teaching elementary and secondary kids winter survival classes for this very reason........What you don't know CAN kill you.

I'm going to put this write up in front of my grade 1-4 students and see what they come up with.

I'll tell you what my kids said.
1. Leo who is 13... why would you leave when it was dark
2. Brook who is 14.. .they didn't have safety gear
3. Tater said they didn't tell any one where they were going
4. They didn't have food or matches
5. if you have limited experience, why wouldn't you take a guide or someone with you who knows the area?
6. Sagie who is 9 said.. if they don't know the territory why did they go out by themselves especially at night?
7. Other questions they had... did they have avalanche beacons? If they did do they know how to use them?

WOW. Sounds like quite the city folk right there. No mountain experience, No knowledge of the area, No way to start a fire, and the worst of all, NO FAWKING COMMON SENSE. How can 2 people NOT get a sled unstuck? Some people should not be in this hobby for this very reason. THEY ARE TOO FAWKING STUPID.

For this very reason, I have stuck to only riding with experienced riders, who have taught me so much. I cannot fathom heading out without this valuable experience.

Glad their ok, but man, what were they thinking...

Glad they made it out safe. Bet they learned their lesson. Just one bad decision can cost a life they made a few and made it out alive extremely lucky.:d

Wow, they must have been riding 2003 RX1 tons if they couldn't get unstuck. Anyway I'm glad they were rescued and are okay. Definitely not the wisest decision on their part to go out after dark.
