So after reading all the posts here I decided to look into the legislation (Alberta) and this what I found:

Traffic Safety Act s.66 allows Police/Peace Officers to enter and inspect vehicles to ensure vehicle safety compliance.

There is no need for reasonable and probable grounds, unless it's a criminal matter that Police are investigating. So if you have gear in an enclosed tray then the cops can look inside to ensure compliance.

As for certification of inspection, well i couldn't find anything specific on that HOWEVER if you've made a significant modification such as a lift then the certification will help establish that it was done properly and the other equipment i.e. headlight height from ground, are still in spec.

No point sending someone to court if they can provide evidence that the vehicle is in good nick!

If your in Alberta and love your toys then you need to have a good read of the following:

Traffic Safety Act
Use of Highway Rules of the Road
Vehicle Equipment Regulations.

Google it, download the .pdf, have a read.., you don't have be a lawyer to understand it (god knows I'm not ;) )

PS: I had a good chuckle at "feeling targeted" because you drive non-spec truck down the highway.

Thanks Tuffmudder! All the right info that I didn't bother to mention the Transport Canada Doc is not as friendly, it is a very dry read, and it is strict on how the vehicles are manufactured for safety..

Also, the comment "I bought the truck like this" doesn't fly! The legislation places the responsibility on the driver/operator/registered owner.

put simply, car dealerships, crappy tire, and any other vehicle mod seller can sell you anything they want, and you can buy, and anyone can install it. BUT. the minute you drive it down the highway and it's against regulations then expect to get a ticket!

I have found golden and revy the best of all the places I ride for cops without the (I was bullied in school so now I'm the bully)I have been pulled over for no reason besides my lifted truck stands out and got a fine cause of my trailer plug adaptor (7to4)has a little blue led in it to show it's working even after I showed him that on the plug it says dot approved on the adaptor but still way better then most places in bc where cops in force there opinion and not the law

I didn't use the line. I bought it like this. The point I'm trying to make is the cop was a a-hole Im saying it how it was he was under the truck making me turn my wheels and the last thing he said to me and my wife. Was bc stands for bring cash... Real cool. Then we stopped at the prestige to grab a bottle and the ladies in the liquor store said thas why people go to Revy because they seen it all go down

I have cops in my family, and yes!!! They have the right to search your vehicle and trailer.

Trailer is one thing, inside your vehicle no. Unless they have reasonable grounds to search. If your truck smells of burnt weed then yes they can search, open liquor..search, firearms laying about...search. Keep you inside clean and then they have no reason to search.

About 6-7 years ago I talked to a buddy of mine who is a RC in Cochrane and he looked into the Golden attitude issue for me. He told me that the Golden RCMP at that time had more private complaints per year than any other detachment in Western Canada. Sounds like nothing has changed.

Ken, thats because Golden was a breading ground for new recruits with ego and power tripping attitude.

sounds like a similar experience we had here in Armstrong. The monitored alarm system at my wife's coffee shop went off at 2;30 AM. So, we get the call and head down there. We waited for 1/2 and still no cops. I decided to go inside and check if myself. It was a false alarm so we head home. We drive by the local 7-11 and here are 3 cop cars with 4 officers (one aux) dealing with a truck that they had pulled over in the parking lot. I told my wife to stop and I started to walk over to ask if they got the alarm. They told me to stand back and don't come any closer but did confirm they got the alarm. This was now an hr later. I asked why they did not send a car to the alarm and they looked at me with disbelief that I would even ask and then replied back "can't you see we are dealing with this situation". I shook my head and replied - wow takes 4 cops to deal with one car/guy? You better get some more training. They did not like that.

I drive this thing around in Alberta. I run an Orange triangle,,keep the speed under 40km's and call it farm equiptment. My sledding truck is stock, but with some of the logging roads we drive to get to the stash spots, some bigger tires would come in really handy.

Would that be like saying "you can't arrest me " and YES!!!!!!!!!!! Why give them a reason to pull you over???

What happened to M1200Turbo, is chitty!!! Cops are just people and people get attitudes when given the right to carry a gun or blast through a red light's.
I'm not close to my entire family, but I do know how to dot my i's and cross my t's.
Ignorance is (not) bliss..... Some rules can be bent, and some rules can be broken..... (The Matrix) and it does work to your advantage :D

P.S. I have never put my plate visible on my sled or banshee and I have never got a ticket.
