Looking for reliable info on the trails by Fawcett Lake, north of Smith. Have heard that there are a lot of them, have also heard that there is not. Have heard that it is all skeg, and others say there is some.
We prefer harder packed trails, not adverse to mud, but don't like skeg all that much, especially if it is real hard to get through or is mostly water. We like to put on the miles and explore.

Would like to camp somewhere on the west side north of the provincial campsite, past the river.
, but since it is about 3 hours to get there want to make sure it is worth it for a long weekend.

Thanks in advance for any and all info.

Thanks SWELD. I did see this thread last week, but then got conflicting info.lol. Are there a lot of trails starting at the west side of the lake? Or is the east side the best?

I haven't posted in a long time. But there are plenty of hardpack trails on the west side of the hiway 44. From Tieland Road all the way up to Hondo & beyond. Old fire roads, Tight treed trails, hills, railway right of ways. Lots of good stuff North and south of the hamlet Chisolm Mills. Although very important. If you cross the traintracks in town. DO NOT GO STRAIGHT WEST TO THE RIVER. That is a private road owned by a very ornery prick who lives in town on the hill. That is his private road that leads to the his gravel pit. If you cross the tracks turn left(south) and go to the river that way. Hope this helps

Across from hondo there is a campsite called mosquito lake , been quading all around hondo .... trails for days with lots of sand mud and river
crossings it is definitly worth the trip there , then there is a big sandhill right next to the athabasca river .... trust me you wont regret it.

fawcett lake is a really great spot as well , about 40 min off highway 44, just make sue you have reg/ ins
trails are well maintained and lots of trails that were just made up and most connect togather.
