A fellow named Michael contacted me from my kijji add about my pickup add, he asked me some questions about it and then offered me 22k sight unseen (which I thought was extremely odd). He told me his father owns a broker company north of Alberta called commuter imports where they sell to dealers.

I googled commuter imports, they seem legit just wanted to see if the collective on here thinks it’s a scam.

He stated he would fly a driver in to Vancouver to grab the truck and said driver would go to CIBC with me to get a bank draft for 22k and then hand it to me with the bill of sale for the truck, he also said the driver would then go to my bank with me ensure the draft is deposited in my account.

Is this the way these kind of transactions go? Should I be weary?

I checked out the company name and listed sales people on AMVIC the company is registered and the salesman is as well...still seems fishy to me though, maybe I’m being over paranoid though?

Unless the driver has signing authority on the account I cannot imagine that CIBC (or any institution) would give him a bank draft based on the Commuter Imports account.

I dunno if its the same company, but a guy at work here sold his pickup to a company like that sight unseen. Gave him what he wanted, a guy came to look at it said to him it’s everything you said it was, he called his boss transferred the money and he drove away in it.
It seems fishy but dont be afraid to consider selling.

Kanedog 2015-2019, thanks for the good times S&M!
It's odd that they would offer you a bill of sale to you. Even odder is how they would escort you to help you deposit a bank draft.
Tell them you need ID and cash. If they are at the bank anyway, cash is just as easy and cheaper as they don't have to pay for draft. If they make any excuse, that's your clue.

I was asking 30k for the truck, so def not what I wanted but it’s also not had the nicest life (I disclosed everything that’s wrong with it in the add)

I will ask about the signing authority thing, if he does in fact have signing authority is a bank draft directly from a bank as good as cash?

With the way the dollar is I wouldn’t doubt it is legit. Just make sure all is good at bank with him. I’ve talked to a few guys and your truck is probably going south for the same price he paying you for it. I have a buddy who deals with a broker and they are sending his trucks to the states every 6-7 months.

So
Ur bank can call the bank that draft came from and verify the
ser# and amount issued to the draft , once that’s confirmed it’s all good
and now ur bank is responsible for lost funds after that ,then u can give up bill of sale/keys

I use to take lots of drafts and do this , now I just like cash

if he can get u a draft at the bank with u ,then just tell him to phone his bank 2days ahead and request a cash pick at the amount needed , and u get cash on the spot and one less weirdo at ur bank with u

There is a guy in grande prairie that does it. All the vehicles he buys go to the us. I had a buddy just sell his megacab to him. Gave him $8k more than the dealer. Came and looked at it, went and picked up a certified cheque and he picked it up two days later after the cheque went in. Was a great deal and the gentleman was very good to deal with. I will get his info.

Take the buyer with you to the bank and make sure its legit.
Do not accept a bank draft without confirming with your bank that one was actually pulled. Its even more of a hassle if the draft is at a different bank.

If I remember right if you bank calls the other and the funds are verified than the hold is also removed???

The crooks have made this a difficult process for the honest folks, due to counterfeit bank drafts.

you need to call his bank to made sure funds are available against the draft or certified cheque. About a year ago there was a guy on the news that got burnt after selling a car and received payment by certified cheque if I recall. About 10 days later his bank called to tell him it was a fake cheque and he is responsible to cover the shortfall. Sad but true

I actually sold a truck to a guy just like that about 6 months ago, he was out of Leduc area, he came and looked at it for 30 seconds we walked into the bank together, he got a bank draft right in front of me. He said he sells them to the states, sends a car carrier there every Friday full of vehicles

A sale is a sale...not like anyone is going to show up without a bank draft for that amount.

I see a weekend getaway. Jump in your truck and drive there, go to the bank and get your cash. Hand him the keys Then have him drop you at the airport and take the ticket he was giving to his courier.
Winner winner chicken dinner...unless he ditches you then your driving home. But at least you’ll know it’s a scam, you still keep the truck.
