I pooched my Xp yesterday afternoon. I think I cold seized it but i might have broke a ring? Engine quit and I couldn;t turn it over by moving clutch. I let it cool down 10 min and I could rock it about 1/3 of a turn. After 1/2 hour I could turn it by hand all the way and it even felt like it had compression. I havn't had a chance to pull plugs or take off head yet. The sled has 855 miles on it. At this milage would you just do a top end or the whole kit and kabootle?

I concur with Maxwell Jim. Sounds like a top end deal. Once you get it apart you should know.

As well I miss mine.

Also when my 800r I put in my 04 chassis went it felt stuck on the top.

It was a bad bottom bearing.

Take the rave guillotines out. U will see 70% of the pistons

What model and year is this XP? A cold seize is when you don't let the sled warm up enough and just ride it like ya stole it.....kinda the way some guys break them in.....lol. Also known as a 4 corner seize.....
If its a summit, a bottom end should last 3500 miles or so..... on a shorty, 5000 miles..... before any major work. Top ends are pretty simple.... Its most likely a couple pistons/rings ($300). Hopefully the cylinders are not damaged, but nikasil linings are tough and ya might get lucky.

Good luck!

Thanks Duck. Its an early 08 163 X. Ya its kind of funny but thats the only thing I could come up with other than a ring. I let it warm up about 10 min and 1/2 throttled it orver to the neighbors field...less rocks on his place..haha. I punched it for about 30 seconds, surged a couple times, thought it was carbs cleaning out, and it quit. A total of about a 10 min ride. Can the thermostats stick in these? I thought it was really funny it would turn over after it cooled down. If it were a ring wouldn't it stay stuck? Ill pull spark plugs and raves and have a peek.

My Son asked if the heated carbs were on...would that lean it out on a warm day like yesterday?

Exact same thing happened to my brothers sled. Tore it apart and it looked kind of like a cold sieze. But it was warmed up really good. Only thing we can think of is the thermostat stuck, and then let go letting super cold coolant into a hot engine. Changed out the top end and put a new thermostat in and no problems at all after that.

If it surged, then you had a lean spot condition. Possibly water in the fuel or crappy gas or a plugged jet from the fuel congealing. I only run premium and shell if at all possible. I also add an ounce of marvel mystery oil to every tank of fuel.

It sound like a mid range lean spot we put A shim 20th under every 08 800r we sold and it solved alot of issues, carb heaters make it run rich.

Yes this, xp's are know for mid range lean spots, if you hold it too long at the point it can seize. I noticed it on the trails up to the alpine all time on my digitron, I have to either pin it or back off to keep it out of that range, but nkow I'm shimed.

that's where mine seized. lean midrange combined with the airbox plate coming dislodged from the horn....-20, following on a hard smooth trail in the snowdust holding it right at that sweet spot. squeak! top end toast, jug fried. went with a shortblock, and dual koso EGT setup.
