I'm back being paranoid about my 800 again. I talked with Dan at Indy Specialty down in Welch Minnesota. He said there is no point pulling it apart unless something happens. The cost to fix it if I have an issue is not a lot more if it all goes bad PROVIDING you don't drive it once it acts up. 90% of the damage is usually from driving it back to the trailer he said. So I wont worry about it. He did say if the clutch isn't set up that is is very hard on the 800 (Which some of you have also mentioned in previous threads) and this could cause things to go south so now I'm looking at getting the clutch overhauled...shimmed and balanced. He will do it for $150.00 plus shipping both ways.

Is there anyone in the Calgary area that can do this for me?

The other hurdle I have is I need to try and find a puller. I've read that you can tip the sled on its side. Fill the hole up with water. Put Teflonn on a longer bolt and crank it in fast and the clutch will "pop" off. Any one tried it??

Baker can help you out in Dewinton.

on my buddies 99rmk 700 i used the water trick. You can use the clutch bolt as it threads threw the clutch first and then into crank. works great on the 99s anyway. let me know if you need more info or help.

One more question if I could. How hard is it to shim the clutch properly? Indy Specialty down south has said the shifting is just as important as the balance on the 800s. You don't want them slapping the belt as this will get transfered to the rod pin. He said "guys that have the clutches done by him say the difference when he does it is second to none and thats just the way it is". (It aint bragging if you can back it up and sounds like he can).

Can these local companies set me up right?

Dan is a top notch guy but honestly I wouldnt get too worked up about it. Measure the crank run out and be sure to keep it within spec, if its out then have the bottom end redone, beyond that I wouldn't dump too much money into clutching, so long as you are happy with its performance (its revving to peak RPM at average elevation for where you ride, holds the rpm when climbing, and it engages/disengages smoothly, etc).

For your general riding its probably fine, if you are looking for a couple more miles/hr on your track speed or trying to gain an extra 1/10th of a second on the drag strip then probably spend some time clutching it. I usually set mine once and then apart from cleaning it, don't mess with it too much apart from tweaking the clickers or adding a little bit of pin weight/subtracting pin weight depending on the time of year and snow conditions. Its easy to start accumulating $1000's of dollars in clutch set ups because once you change the primary, you can change the secondary to match or work better, and then you might have to start messing with gearing as well.........

THX I'm more interested in belt engagement to reduce shock, not performance. Indy Specialty said they would set it up for $150.00. That is cheap insurance if it will help keep the crank in it. Was hoping someone could do it locally to save in shipping and keep the money local........ but they have to know what they are doing.

Just talked to Dan, My clutch is done and he's sending it back today. It was way out balance. He added some sort of spacer so the spring lasts longer, new weights and some sort of bushing. He said he will be sending specific instructions on how he wants it reinstalled...... I thought you would just slide it on and torque it up?

He probably wants you to put it on with the piston at top dead center or something of that sorts.

It will be interesting to see. I'll let you know. Was thinking balanced should be balanced, what difference would it make but he seems to know his stuff so I will definitely follow his instructions.
I'll keep you posted. Should have it back in about a week.

$35.00 was in a small wood crate just big enough for the clutch to fit into, insured for 300, or was it 500 can't remember. Aprox 5 day delivery. Canada post.

Sounds good. I'm trying to decide if I'll send my clutch to Indy or Carl's Cycle.

This is the first time I have used Dan. He seems like a pretty straight shooter and from all the research I have done has a pretty good rep. Cost wise he charges $150.00 to balance and set up plus parts. I'm not 100% sure what the total cost was (he told me on the phone but cant remember the price off all the parts) Doesn't look like it's been processed on the Visa yet..

If you need to borrow my crate let me know. My clutch should be back late this week or early next week. I'll shoot you the inside dimensions of the crate (once I get it back) to make sure your clutch would fit in it.

I've heard nothing but good things about him. I just got a hold of him 5 mins ago and I decided that I'll be sending my clutch off tonight. It's all packed already in an old mini wheats cereal box with a ton of ducktape around it so it can survive a drop from space! haha. Thanks for the offer though!
