I have a couple XMs one with 3600kms and the other has 2800kms. Was thinking I would change the chains just to avoid major damage if they go. Just wonder if anyone knows what kind of life can be expected out of them.
Thx.

I don't know if the Doo uses the superior HYVO type chain or weaker silent chain but either way it should last much longer than that. The key is doing the first oil change after 3-4 rides and then at least once a year after. Proper tension is of course key. Too loose will often cause unexpected snapping. I had a big bore King Cat that l put 5000 miles on the original chain. ATF for oil.

Well I change the oil before the start of every riding season and keep an eye on the tension. So thanks for the info and I will keep my money in my jeans.

They go a long time, but when they do break they take out your chaincase and that is a pricey fix.

When you change the oil take the chain off and inspect for damaged links.

I change mine out every 3000 kms, change oil using ATF every 500kms, to me the $80 for a new one is cheap insurance vs one coming apart and doing damage.

I have gotten over 6000 km when running the two or two and half track. The 3 inch is harder on chains. I had one let go at 4000 km and it was a nice MESS

I would inspect it. My 12 xp had several binding links and visible wear on the gears at about 3500 kms. If i had not done a belt drive it would have been replaced. Just remove the chain and pull it over your finger, it should bend around nice and fluid, without any links binding up. If there's nothing to raise suspicion throw it back in. Also i don't suppose many actually do this, but as a rule chains and gears should be done As a set.
