Being pessimistic and cynical, I think it is the calm before the storm. Rumors are abound about the relationship of Y2Y and the BC NDP and a large amount of presumed closures coming this spring/summer throughout the province with large portions coming in the Kootenays.

Still working on it. One step forward finally feels pretty good. There are some great people to work with including the Assistant Deputy Minister, who has been so willing to help find balance in this conservation puzzle. Don't give up hope brother. We can keep moving forward. Next election isn't too far away.

Thanks for your hard work Trish BUT...this is exclusive access to crown land for a select few. We whine about it when Heli Ski Companys get it. Now we're hypocrites. I won't tell you how I really feel about that.

I know this is unrealistic, but in a perfect world this should have been a law suit against closures they can no longer justify.

I think it is a huge mistake opening any door that starts us negotiating for riding areas. Where will it stop?
This smells far too much like a membership drive by the BCSF.
How does that membership make anybody more responsible?
Watch for the next thing being mandatory certification courses.
Don't get me wrong, I applaud you for your efforts but I see a can of worms best left closed.

To all of those bitching. Just a heads up.. this land was going to remain closed initially for "historic habitat" before we began working on this. When you have Conservation officers, people from the science team, and the ministry praising and recognizing the efforts of our BCSF clubs, it truly shows we are on the right path and gaining the respect of those who simply used to say no because it was easier to do that than deal with mass disorganization and angry people. Donegal works her kiester off, and I put in between 20 to 40 hours a week on this, (for a long time) and I can assure you it was not to be some elitist muhahahahaha controller of all things rideable. It was to gain back access to lands that we cherished, and feared never gaining access again. With so many Anti groups and eco activists groups out there, you'd think we within our own user group could get along and respect the efforts of those trying to help. I'm incredibly thankful for this opportunity.

In no way was I diminishing what you have done Trish. In fact I am glad that you are doing what you are doing. I also have supported Donegal for years for the work that she has done.

All I was saying, was that this area is in the crosshairs of Y2Y and other eco activists like Widlsight and there is no doubt in my mind they have been/will be having meetings like they did with Shannon Phillips in Alberta regarding the Castle and the Bighorn. The eastern Koots were in for huge closures at the end of the last reign of the NDP and I see nothing different in the remaining years of their term.

Yup the permits will be issued to clubs, so club members are allowed to go on life as usual once the permit application is approved by the Ministry of FLNRO.

This is how we have been operating in the north Shuswap for years and it has worked real well. Only thing is we have to apply every year but so far no issues. We have got our non conformance down to zero the last 3 years and actually slightly expanded our area for better use of the terrain to distinguish the boundaries. The government realizes that working with us to help patrol these areas is better than just a bunch of vigilantes running around with no ties to anything. Hopefully it keeps working this way long into the future as this is our only way to keep access in our certain area. Especially since my zone is considered the “hub” of caribou land.

That’s normal for the Pass. They don’t like outsiders in their areas. The entire Darkwoods area when rideable before all the restrictions was off limits to anyone not from Creston. I won’t even buy fuel in Creston for fear of supporting their exclusive community.

I'm not going to pretend to know the details here, but it certainly sounds that MOMMA is encouraged a the very least of this progress. To that I congratulate her and any other group of people who spend some or perhaps all of their own time trying to deal with government SOBs who are shut down riding areas. area is opening not closing and that's great. There are many clubs with exclusive access to areas for club members only. If you don't like that then join that club, it's generally the small ones with very reasonable membership rates.
