I'm looking at getting either a 2010 can-am 800 with 1400km or a 2012 poo 850 with 830km. The can-am is cheaper and close to me. I have zero experience with either one as I ride a brute force right now. I'm looking for real world experience on reliability and common problems. Thanks

For me it'd be the Can-am, buddy had a 2010 800 lwb that he traded in with almost 7000km on it. Went through a fuel pump and power steering motor in that time.

I had the 850 Polaris sold it at around 5000 km

Starter
All front end bushings 3 times
Brakes 5 times
Power steer pump
3 sets of tires
4 sets ball joints

That was in 3 years.

I do ride a lot each year. Mostly muddy areas

My 2013 850xp has been a great machine, I am on my 3rd set of brake pads only because the OEM were crap and the 2nd set I put cheapos in, this time I installed EBC's. One thing you will have to consider is the 850xp is hit or miss with spinning the timing gear which require engine disassemble to repair if it happens, most are from engines made in Mexico, not sure what year this started. My upper and lower control arm bushings have wear, but I just run them because they aren't hurting anything, accelerated wear probably because I am running a 2" lift with 28" OL2's.

Have owned both ... The canam is better made... The Popo works better.
Both good machines , a tad more maintenance to the popo, I had an850 and it was fantastic . I would say the one that has been maintained the best is a safe bet ..,,

My 2010 800 outty xt has 1700km on it all original, needed nothing as of yet. The sportsman I had before it I coulda bought the outty with the money I put into it in parts over three years, Totally brutal was always broken. mind you it had over 10000km on it when the speedo broke and I ran it for a long time after that. I do like my outty but the 10 has no heat shields and it will cook the skin off your legs and melt your boots if your putting around with it.

With that year can am inspect the frame really well. The crappy stock brakes will have been replaced by now. After that it is all normal maintenance. Not a big fan of Polaris myself quads or sleds.

^^^x2 Lots of people love the Sportsmans but they've been bad luck for me.

What year of canned ham has the bad diff in the front? I think either would be a good quad.

As mentioned, brakes, ball joints and all the bushings were common wear items on my 850. My 800 putty seemed to be just brakes and my shift linkage is kinda stiff and goofy trying to get it to read neutral or park when wanting to start it.
Seemed to have more torque with the can-am, little more top end with the 850, and nicer to steer, and much smoother ride on the 850. both of mine were 09's without power steering.

I agree with rzrgade, the 2010 Popo I have is a great machine if maintained. I was disappointed that the front bushings needed to be replaced after 2 years and 400Kms.

Yes in terms of wear items the Popo is of lesser quality , that said I prefer the popo clutching , handling and 4x4 system...

i have 2011 850 xp 3500 k or so . broke an axle on a animal ride, a 800 can am did as well that day. dealer does most of my maintenance although the decent control made a noise the oil change had not been done at the proper interval, changed the oil all was fine no fillings, I have my brakes inspected every service and am surprised that some of you had issues as i have not. i love the power steering compared to a couple of competing brands with power steering.
