I just rebuilt my 02 summit 800 last fall. It cost $300 for new pistons(SPX), and $600 for cylinders(sending mine in for exchange), can't remember what the gasket kit cost. Did the work myself so pretty cheap fix.

Wouldn't recommend the pistons from them. Just buy BRP. About two weeks ago on one of the pistons the pin that holds the ring from moving fell out into the inside, and dropped down into the crank case, causing it to seize up which also allowed my ring to move, and contact the exhaust valve wrecking the piston, and cylinder. They are warrantying everything though, I had to send them them the motor, and they are replacing everything for me. Pretty good on them.

As long as your crank is good just rebuild it.

late this afternoon i too it to the mechanic, i have asked him to assess it, and tell me the cost of repair 'vs' a new motor. so i should know by tomorrow arvo... best case scenario top end rebuild with a new cylinder, 2nd best scenario - full rebuild, 3rd - new motor (in which case i will prob just sell the thing)

you get what you pay for. if you want another 5000+ km go with the short block. for a quick fix just do it the cheap way and sell it.

Re: blown motor or gasket problems? update.

as you can see from the pics, one piston is well gone, though from the amount of shrapnel sitting in the bottom end, i am thinking of getting another motor...

though is it possible to replace the top end (pistons, rings, bearings, cylinders, gaskits etc etc) and just flush out the bottom end so it is clear of any debris?

kenvb - thanks for the offer, i greatly appreciate it. atm i am in revelstoke, but i think i am just going to have to find a cheap new motor.

i took it to greg at rough country here in revy, and he has told me that i can fix it with a top end rebuild including couple of new cylinders, though, he did advise me that a new motor would be better, and last longer.

if you know of anyone in your area with a rebuilt motor they want to offload, please drop me a line.
