oh and you still need to find out why your engine went, dont want to be getting a new top end then it going again for the same reason, yours looks like a lean burn down but could be wrong

no coolant in there, I would suggest also possible leaky head gasket and/or base gasket and overheat melt down. For a rebuilt motor it was really dirty, unfortunately I think it wasn't done right the first time.

If you only have $4500 to your name, getting a rebuild properly is the best solution. Someone already did a "cheap rebuild" on this motor and this is what got you here in the first place. IMO, wait until you have a little more $$ to build it right, or sell the whole sled for parts as one unit. If you don't do it right the first time, its only going to cause you more problems and waste more of your $$$.

modman, i do see your point, though i do need this sled to get some backcountry shots to fulfill my snowboarding sponsorship requirements for the remainder of this season. if i were to sell this sled at 1500$, and spend another 1500 on a new (used sled) that may get me out of trouble till the end of the season, and not break the bank. do you think that the value of the sled as is would be 1500$?

I would sell it for parts.

If this is really for a career opportunity, no sense in messing around with another cheap, maybe will last sled. I would go and talk to the rental dudes and see if you can set something up.

if you need it for a specific reason then that's a little different, its almost like needing a car to get back and forth to work. I would go talk to the rental guys as well, see if they can set up a deal for you, maybe even tag their name onto the sponsor list. Depends on how many days you think you need on the hill. If you could score a great rental rate (say $150 a day), then that equals about 10 days on the hill for the same price as fixing your sled. If you only need one or two days on the hill to get the shots, then I would sell the sled and go rental all the way.

If you have some sort of mechanical knowledge the sled can be fixed, but you might want to look around here and on Ebay for a good used motor because it will likely cost just as much as the rebuild on yours. Looked for wrecked sleds or older sleds as well. Value of your current ride is about $1500-2000 whole depending on condition, if you part it all out, selling each piece individually, then its probably worth $2000 but you will end up with a bunch of parts that no one wants that you will have to store or throw away later. If you want the whole thing gone, then its best to sell it whole.

Modman,

How did you come up with a value of $1500 - $2000? If you are considering that to be in running order I think it is low.

i have considered a new motor, but i think it will work out most cost economical to sell this sled for 1800 ( as it only cost me 2200 to buy), take the 400 or 500 loss as a knock on the chin and buy a new sled.... i need something in the next 2 weeks...

any thoughts?

Modman,

How did you come up with a value of $1500 - $2000? If you are considering that to be in running order I think it is low.

Came up with the cost from the fact that his sled will not be in running order, it will have a blown motor since he was asking what it would be worth if he didn't fix the motor.

Even running its not worth more than $3000. Crack must be cheap these days because people seem to be smoking a lot of it. Saw an ad for a 1997? VMAX in Camrose for $3500 *cough cough*. Good luck with that.

All the manufacturer's have stepped to a new chassis, which makes the old chassis obsolete. Many people may not like it but it is what it is - new stuff makes the old stuff worth less. The "Alberta Advantage" ain't there anymore, so asking prices should reflect what stuff is worth, not what someone "wants" it to be worth.

Im a little late but if your having thoughts of rebuilding look very close at the bottom end. What I see and hear on this motor is Identical to what happened to my old mans summit thousand last year white smoke is coolant burning, his hydrolic locked and cracked the crank case. Id say head gasket is a culprit. Good luck

is there a chance that the white smoke was the antifreeze due to a pinched oring and the motor hydrauliced and broke the ring land and pooched everything, if it doesnt need a crank u can fix for under 1000 bucks, send the cylinder to mongoose coatings and they can probobly supply pistons also.

Yup white smoke = coolant leak. I would tear the whole thing apart and assess. Shopping around for parts and doing the rebuild yourself is the cheapest but if you need it for work in two weeks I would just shop around for a new motor and part this one out later or something. Or borrow a sled. Too bad. Sounds like the original job wasn't done properly. :(

You can get a brand new short block for 2600 minus a 700 core. So 1900 is what you end up paying. I know this for a fact as I just finished installing my own.

Thats bad luck man, sorry to hear of your troubles. It sucks needing a sled to work, believe me I know.

IMO I would say that when it was rebuilt the mechanic wasnt careful enough with the base gasket. Too much sticking into the cylinder after assembly and the piston caught it, tore it and opened a direct line to your cooling ports allowing you to eat all your antifreeze and then unfortunately blow the motor.

Martin Motorsports in edmonton should have a motor on the shelf for you and you could probably even find someone to bring it out.

Good luck

If the crank is still in good condition then I'd say rebuild it! Looks as though a cylinder can be had cheaply and a rebuild kit can often be had for less than $500.00. Just my 2 cents. Good Luck!!!
